August 14, 2016 – Ocean Isle Beach Vacation!

IMG_8291Aaaaahhhhh, vacation week!  Can we go back already?! We look forward to this week all year long. Seems hard to believe that this year is our fifth year heading to Ocean Isle Beach.  Five years, what?! Wishing time would slow down.

We have so many pictures to share. I had a hard time narrowing down all the photos. While many may seem the same, when I look at them I see different things. They way they show Griffin’s personality, or what he is in to playing with this year. All of the interactions with everyone throughout the week. It’s just a fun time and we are grateful to my parents for providing this week for us each year!

As always, we began our trip with our traditional stop at Sharky’s for pizza, sweet potato fries, and beer. Mom and Dad joined us this year too 🙂 Then once everyone arrived and unloaded at the house we walked down to check out the ocean.

Finn is really sensitive and often gets teary when he gets corrected or feels he disappointed someone. Kevin and I are realizing we’re being far to “adultish” on him and need to be much better about letting him be a 3 year old and do what 3 year olds do – and not correcting him so much. That’s not what’s happening here, Grandpa was just having a talk with Finn, but I thought it was a good way to capture his expressions. He has really mastered the sassy-lip face, almost making his lips look like the beak of a duck!DSC_0260 DSC_0261 IMG_8328 IMG_8329 IMG_8334 Though it is hard to tell, this is Dad and me, heading out pretty far into the ocean. The water was quite warm and nice this year!IMG_8335 IMG_8339 IMG_8340 IMG_8345 IMG_8347 IMG_8348 IMG_8350 IMG_8352 IMG_8354 IMG_8355This year we found a little, tiny, sand crab! Finn thought it was so cute and wanted to hold it. IMG_8356 Here “Spidey” is throwing his webs at Grandpa!IMG_8358 IMG_8360 IMG_8363 IMG_8364 IMG_8365 IMG_8370This year we took a road trip to Southport, NC, about a 40 minute drive away. It is a cute little town with many shops and restaurants. We took a picnic lunch, and then walked around for a bit and shopped and went to a maritime museum before, you guessed it, meeting everyone to eat again for dinner! Finn has his dinner a bit early at Fishy Fishy!DSC_0263 IMG_8372 IMG_8388 IMG_8377 DSC_0268 DSC_0275 DSC_0269 DSC_0278 IMG_8396 IMG_8400 IMG_8404 IMG_8405 IMG_8407 IMG_8430IMG_8458 IMG_8444 IMG_8452 IMG_8436 IMG_8468 IMG_8466 IMG_8463 IMG_8461 IMG_8460 IMG_8475 IMG_8476 IMG_8480 IMG_8482 This is the first year we tried out the surf boards. At low tide it was awesome to teach the kiddos how to ride in the waves.  Oh, and they thought it was pretty fun to zoom down the beach on an inch or two of water. They even pulled each other!IMG_8496 IMG_8500 IMG_8528 IMG_8530 IMG_8535 IMG_8519 IMG_8545 IMG_8513 IMG_8509 IMG_8515We enjoyed an nice date night again this year at the Sugar Shack followed with enjoying the nice evening on the upper deck at the Ocean Isle Fish Company!IMG_8453 IMG_8455This years take home lovie was a shark. Finn fell asleep on the way home from a quick trip to Callahan’s in Calabash. This year he slept in a big boy bed at night and the cot during the day for naps. Not sure why, but that is what he consistently chose each day.  I checked on him one night before going to bed and below is what I found! When we were at the store, he wanted to give lovies to each of his cousins too – so the last morning we took the annual jammie photo with each of their lovies.

IMG_8542 IMG_8573 IMG_8571 IMG_8563 IMG_8576It was nice weather on our drive home, however, Powell was getting big storms. So we decided to stop in southern Ohio at my old stomping grounds, Ohio University, and have a nice dinner. We had drinks on the patio at Jackie O’s Brewery (which wasn’t there when I was!) and dinner downstairs. Their beers are served throughout Ohio and in Columbus but I’d not had one before being there. I had a raspberry wheat and it was yum! We walked around a bit too, took photos of some familiar places, and had ice cream at a coffee shop that I went to all the time when I was in school. IMG_8582 IMG_8584 IMG_8585 IMG_8591 IMG_8593IMG_8614 IMG_8625 IMG_8596 IMG_8602 IMG_8606 IMG_8608 IMG_8609 IMG_8611 IMG_8612 IMG_8616 IMG_8618Dad and Mom gave us copies of all the photos they took too – there were so many great ones! So I’m including a bunch of them here 🙂  He really captured everyone’s personalities quite well. Some were taken with his waterproof camera from out in the ocean!DSCF3315 DSCF3382 DSCF3411 DSCF3433 DSCF3437 DSCF3449 DSCF3461 DSCF3477 DSCF3481 DSCF3512 DSCF3513 DSCF3518 DSCF3523 DSCF3533 DSCF3535 DSCF3537 DSCF3539 DSCF3542 DSCF3547 DSCF3553 DSCF3554 DSCF3555 DSCF3572 DSCF3581 DSCF3588 DSCF3590 DSCF3601 DSCF3612 DSCF3691 DSCF3718 DSCF3725 DSCF3742 DSCF3763 DSCF3765 DSCF3778 DSCF4016 DSCF4022 DSCF4040 DSCF4046 DSCF4053 DSCF4062 DSCF4070 DSCF4081 DSCF4090 DSCF4109 DSCF4117 DSCF4126 DSCF4133 DSCF4149 DSCF4150 DSCF4155 DSCF4174 DSCF4181 DSCF4185 DSCF4200 DSCF4204 DSCF4221 DSCF4243 DSCF4247 DSCF4253 DSCF4274 DSCF4282 DSCF4283 DSCF4290 DSCF4292 DSCF4310 DSCF4325 DSCF4348 DSCF4352 DSCF4353 DSCF4355 IMG_0672 IMG_0676 IMG_0681 IMG_0684 IMG_0696 IMG_0707 IMG_0739 IMG_0742 IMG_0750 IMG_0755 IMG_0770 IMG_0779 IMG_0788 IMG_0790 IMG_0795 IMG_0802 IMG_0806

Amy setup her cameras on the back deck and we did our annual round of family photos on our last night there. They turned out great! Then we headed to the beach with her for some Armstrong family photos. It was CRAZY windy and super bright, as you can see in the photos. We are lucky to have such a talented photography in the family 🙂IMG_8570 01_OIBfamily 02_OIBfamily 03_OIBfamily 04_OIBfamily 05_OIBfamily 06_OIBfamily 07_OIBfamily 08_OIBfamily 09_OIBfamily ArmstrongOIB2016__15 ArmstrongOIB2016_1 ArmstrongOIB2016_2 ArmstrongOIB2016_3 ArmstrongOIB2016_4 ArmstrongOIB2016_5 ArmstrongOIB2016_6 ArmstrongOIB2016_7 ArmstrongOIB2016_8 ArmstrongOIB2016_9 ArmstrongOIB2016_10 ArmstrongOIB2016_11 ArmstrongOIB2016_12 ArmstrongOIB2016_13 ArmstrongOIB2016_14 ArmstrongOIB2016_16

Vacation! We were fortunate to spend this week down in Pigeon Forge, TN for our annual fall getaway. We again stayed in Sherwood Forest in a two bedroom cabin. The weather was lovely – warm and enjoyable everyday but one! And we had made plans earlier in the week when we knew the rain would be coming to make that day an indoor day. We were on the go a lot so it certainly wasn’t a very restful vacation. But certainly a time to be away from the norm of our regular activities and chores and tasks and just be together.

The first night we stayed in downtown Gatlinburg this year. Our hotel has a nice pool and hot tub – but boy, have we realized how spoiled we are by taking swimming lessons at Goldfish! The water anywhere else isn’t ever as warm as Goldfish!! We arrived at the hotel and went swimming before heading off to dinner at Kevin’s favorite place, Smoky Mountain Brewery.  They have really yummy food (pizza in particular!) and this year I tried their seasonal Pumpkin brew (no surprise there, I know) and it was delicious. The next morning we woke up and headed for the Pancake Pantry where we had the best seats ever! We were right along the front windows of the restaurant which looks out onto the main street of Gatlinburg. Prime people watching and lots of bright light. IMG_2195 IMG_2217 IMG_20151116_101035464_HDR-2 IMG_20151116_100810882-2 IMG_2220 IMG_2225Afterward we walked around the strip and then new this year, we went to Ober Gatlinburg.  We took the big sky tram up to the resort-like area where we spent the next few hours exploring the wildlife encounter (cool bears, sea otters, and the like), riding kids rides, and Kevin took Finn on his first ever roller coaster! Kevin was really excited to take him and they had a fun time. It was hard to get a good picture as they were pretty far away, so I took a video of them heading up the hill!IMG_2335 IMG_2328IMG_2238 IMG_2227 IMG_2232 IMG_2239 IMG_2254 IMG_2255 IMG_2258 IMG_2265 IMG_2244 IMG_2274 IMG_2275 IMG_2308 IMG_2283 IMG_2291

IMG_2309 IMG_2312 IMG_2316 IMG_2320 IMG_2323We spent Monday night, our Anniversary, at home with a tasty spaghetti and meatball dinner. Afterward we all took a dip in the hot tub – a new thing for Finn this year too. Kevin lowered the temperature so it was more like bath water and Finn loved it. Our cabin had tiny rubber duckies in the bathrooms and he brought one out into the hot tub. It turned out to be a perfect toy! IMG_2347 IMG_2343

Finn also loved playing pool this year! In past years we’ve used the pool table as a changing table, or ignored it altogether, but this year each morning Finn woke up he would say “please, may I go play that game up dare”. He had some fun for sure!DSC_0230DSC_0236DSC_0237DSC_0241DSC_0247DSC_0248DSC_0250On a nice and warm day we headed to the Smoky Mountain National Park and drove through Cade’s Cove. We were there two years ago and were feeling all nostalgic as we visited certain places – so we reenacted some photos we had taken the last time we were there when Finn was only about 8 months old. the ones in the field and along the fence, in particular. And Finn had the special treat of riding in Kevin’s lap through portions of the park as we drove from one area to the next. As you can see, Finn is really in to balancing and walking on logs, standing up on logs, and such. Even his preschool teachers have remarked how well he can balance himself!DSC_0253DSC_0259IMG_2388DSC_0270DSC_0272DSC_0274DSC_0277DSC_0282DSC_0284DSC_0288DSC_0291IMG_2355IMG_2360IMG_2362IMG_2374IMG_2366IMG_2378IMG_2369IMG_2371IMG_2379IMG_2381DSC_0306DSC_0321DSC_0297DSC_0319DSC_0299DSC_0313IMG_2393IMG_2400DSC_0408DSC_0410DSC_0413
IMG_2405IMG_2409DSC_0416DSC_0331DSC_0338DSC_0341DSC_0343DSC_0340DSC_0345DSC_0350DSC_0355DSC_0362DSC_0377DSC_0376DSC_0397DSC_0384DSC_0385DSC_0389DSC_0392DSC_0395DSC_0398DSC_0404DSC_0405DSC_0372DSC_0373DSC_0375IMG_2414DSC_0427DSC_0453DSC_0448DSC_0441DSC_0442DSC_0444DSC_0436DSC_0454DSC_0458DSC_0461DSC_0462DSC_0463IMG_2418IMG_2419IMG_2421IMG_2423IMG_2425IMG_2427DSC_0476DSC_0482DSC_0500DSC_0501DSC_0505DSC_0510IMG_2435DSC_0516DSC_0521DSC_0524DSC_0525DSC_0532

Kevin got out of our car at one point where we had just left the park as we saw several people looking up into the woods. Turns out there was a bear up there – if you look close, you can see it.  That’s about as close as we got to one!DSC_0535DSC_0542By the time we were on our way back home, our little guy was really tuckered out!
IMG_2432DSC_0543Another day we went to the Island which has several retail shops and lots of entertainment for little ones. This year Finn was big enough to be able to do several of rides and since he is in to trains we all rode the train together, which takes you on a 10 minute route throughout the Island. IMG_2436 IMG_2440 IMG_2445 IMG_2448 IMG_2463 IMG_2466 IMG_2476 IMG_2489 IMG_2496

IMG_2499 IMG_2505 IMG_2508 IMG_2511

IMG_2518 IMG_2521 IMG_2525 IMG_2528 It’s also tradition to take Finn to the Dixie Stampede. We enjoy the show, but mostly enjoy watching Finn watch the show and see how he is so mesmerized by all of it.  And of course petting the horses at the end of it all is pretty fun too. He hardly ate much this year (there is dinner during the show) as he was so into watching what was going on! IMG_2529 IMG_2530 IMG_2533 IMG_2534 IMG_2537 IMG_2539 IMG_2542 IMG_2547 IMG_2550 IMG_2554 IMG_2558 IMG_2560 IMG_2562 IMG_2573 IMG_2578 IMG_2584We did have some lounge time at the cabin too. Can you believe it was nice enough to leave our cabin door open and Finn to be running around in his swim suit!DSC_0002DSC_0011DSC_0014DSC_0016

I looked over one time and saw all of our shoes lined up like this thanks to Finn.  He actually completed the ends, making them symmetrical!DSC_0017DSC_0020DSC_0029DSC_0033DSC_0039DSC_0042DSC_0044DSC_0047IMG_2591IMG_2596IMG_2609IMG_2614IMG_2620IMG_2625DSC_0055DSC_0060DSC_0050DSC_0056DSC_0062DSC_0084DSC_0070DSC_0074DSC_0081IMG_2632IMG_2634IMG_2635IMG_2636IMG_2637IMG_2641IMG_2642IMG_2644IMG_2647IMG_2648IMG_2667DSC_0107DSC_0110IMG_2685IMG_2687DSC_0139IMG_2682IMG_2701IMG_2702IMG_2704IMG_2709DSC_0163DSC_0168DSC_0148IMG_2693DSC_0156DSC_0151IMG_2713IMG_2715IMG_2721IMG_2724DSC_0171DSC_0172DSC_0173DSC_0176DSC_0184IMG_2726DSC_0197DSC_0203IMG_2749IMG_2750IMG_2751IMG_2752IMG_2755And here are our “official” photos from our fun at Dollywood, the ferris wheel at the Island, the Dixie Stampede, and the roller coaster at Ober!IMG_2896 IMG_2898 IMG_2899 IMG_2900 IMG_2901 IMG_2902 IMG_2903 IMG_2904 IMG_2906 IMG_2907 IMG_2908 IMG_2909 IMG_2897Finn was sporting Kevin’s new slippers for a bit before we left the cabin on our last evening to head to dinner at Paula Deen’s restaurant.  We enjoyed delicious southern food, family style, and left there stuffed!
IMG_2766IMG_2770IMG_2775IMG_2796IMG_2795IMG_2794IMG_2784IMG_2793IMG_2786IMG_2792

Finn is really good in the car, though he rarely will sleep more than an hour. He played a bit with his trucks and scooped some raisins, lol. And Finn was happy to be home and see Lily and Cam Cam. He really has been such a great helper with Cammie. Each morning and evening he helps me fill up her food bowl and take it outside. He opens and closes the door, and if the weather is nice he also likes to wait on the patio and watch her!IMG_2798 IMG_2799 IMG_2801

August 16, 2015 – Vacation!

07_Armstrong_OIB

We had a lovely vacation this summer with my family at our traditional stomping grounds in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  The weather was nice and sunny every day except for one afternoon when it stormed. It was perfect weather for the beach where we spent several hours each day in the water, playing in the sand, and having picnic lunches. Once we arrived at the beach Finn rarely sat down. He constantly ran back and forth from the water to our sand play area with buckets of water, which he dumped immediately and then ran back for more. He love it.  He is at a great age for playing at the beach. He went out in the water with daddy, and Grandpa and Grandma many times (despite my worry of sharks!). He really wanted to let go and be the first to catch each wave. He kept telling Papa and daddy to go out further!

Here is the beginning of our trip. We hit the road by 7:30 am – I was impressed we met our goal departure time 🙂  Finn is all cozy in his pj’s with his fuzzy blanket and animals, and of course his sunglasses.  Our first stop: Tim Horton’s, for some doe doe’s, of course!IMG_20150807_073936502

Guess who we ran in to at our first pit-stop at the Tamarack exit in Beckley, WV! I had missed a text message that they were going to be stopping there and we were getting ready to leave when Kevin spotted mom and dad walking nearby in the parking lot!?IMG_20150807_113547077_HDR

Our first night we spent in Durham and ventured out for some ice cream after dinner. (top photo compliments of Amy!). 000025450022IMG_20150807_194228815_HDR IMG_20150807_194633016 IMG_20150807_194809228_HDR
As tradition has it, we stopped for lunch at Sharky’s once we arrived in Ocean Isle Beach. It was perfect timing and we enjoyed a yummy pizza, sweet potato fries, and chicken!  While we were waiting to check in at our house we enjoyed some time outside on the deck. IMG_20150808_134326407 IMG_20150808_143154117_HDR

Once we arrived at the house it was full on play mode followed by an evening trip to the water after dinner. It was a beautiful sunset that evening. And the days that followed were pretty much wake up, eat, beach, eat, nap, eat, sleep, repeat!IMG_20150808_152654 IMG_20150808_172233292 DSC_0001 DSC_0003 DSC_0005 DSC_0008 DSC_0011 DSC_0012 DSC_0015 DSC_0018 DSC_0021 DSC_0023 DSC_0026 DSC_0027 DSC_0028 DSC_0030 DSC_0032 DSC_0034 DSC_0038 DSC_0039 DSC_0040 DSC_0042 DSC_0047 DSC_0053 DSC_0059 DSC_0063 DSC_0069 DSC_0077

And here are many lovely family photos that Amy took, not that you couldn’t have sensed the focus and quality is far better than mine – but wanted to give credit where credit is due! Amy was able to capture that too 🙂 There are several awesome photos – I can’t wait to get some prints!01_Armstrong_OIB 02_Armstrong_OIB 03_Armstrong_OIB 04_Armstrong_OIB 05_Armstrong_OIB 06_Armstrong_OIB 07_Armstrong_OIB 08_Armstrong_OIB 09_Armstrong_OIB 10_Armstrong_OIB 11_Armstrong_OIB 12_Armstrong_OIB 13_Armstrong_OIB 14_Armstrong_OIB 15_Armstrong_OIB 16_Armstrong_OIB 17_Armstrong_OIB 18_Armstrong_OIB 19_Armstrong_OIB 20_Armstrong_OIB 21_Armstrong_OIB 22_Armstrong_OIB 23_Armstrong_OIB 24_Armstrong_OIB 25_Armstrong_OIB 26_Armstrong_OIB 27_Armstrong_OIB
