Reid Christopher Armstrong
born May 20, 2017 at 1:51 am
8 pounds, 8 ounces; 20.25 inches

We are so happy and relieved that our baby boy is now here – safe and healthy! He is an amazing gift and blessing to us and we are so very thankful for God’s provision for our family and for Reid.

We are also thrilled to have such amazing photos captured by my sister Amy to document our pregnancy and family before his arrival, his birth, and his beginnings as a newborn. She certainly has a gift and we are grateful she shares it with us 🙂

First, our maternity photos. We took these on a Sunday afternoon, at our house and in our front and back yards. I was 36 weeks pregnant.

And here are the photos from Reid’s labor, delivery, and visit from family on Saturday, May 20th. Warning: there are some graphic photos and plenty that document the various crazy positions I was in throughout the process – including being on my hands and knees (where you can basically see a large blanket in the air!). Dr. Plante pointed out how awesome Reid’s umbilical cord was – it was super thick and curly-q’d like a pasta noodle. She said it’s no wonder he was so big and healthy with a cord like that. Turns out the cord was also around his neck, hence the fluctuations in his heart rate after my water was broken and during contractions.

We were thankful for the support of my sister and parents throughout my labor. My nerves got the best of me at times and I didn’t always feel super great, especially when they would have me lay down on my back to check my cervix (hence the oxygen mask at various times). I  had a lot of good distraction via conversations with my parents and as Kevin likes to point out every time I would talk to my dad my blood pressure readings would improve (hence he kept asking my Dad to sit by me and chat, lol!).   I really am there, behind that big booty and sheet 🙂 And here I am in the “throne” position toward the end of laboring, all in an effort to get Reid’s head to turn from sideways to facing backwards. I had to lean forward and basically hug the ball for upwards of 40 minutes! And here are his newborn photos and our first official photos as a family of four!

Well, this was a big week as Finn wrapped up his first year of pre-school as a Guppy! He really enjoyed school this year. He like going to the “muscle room” to play, the art work, being around the other kids. Yikes, 8 months are gone in a flash. His last day was on a Wednesday, and fortunately, I was able to take the day off work. I took Finn to school, picked him up, and we headed downtown big city to have lunch with Daddy at our place Si Senor. We also walked around the city a bit and walked Daddy back to his work building. We explored around inside a bit too, there is a really nice atrium that connects the buildings, and Finn had an ice cream treat. IMG_6389 IMG_6399 IMG_6403IMG_6443 IMG_6407 IMG_6414 IMG_6415 IMG_6418 IMG_6423 IMG_6425 IMG_6428 IMG_6431 IMG_6433 IMG_6436 IMG_6438Earlier in the week Debbie was off for a couple of days, so my sister was kind enough to watch Griffin on Monday. She picked him up from pre-school, along with the other kiddos and they had a fun afternoon playing in bear-suits and being silly. My mom came down later that night and we had dinner and then headed to Graeter’s for dessert, of course! Then on Tuesday mom stayed home and played with Finn for the day. Super thankful our families are always helping us when we need it!IMG_6355 IMG_6356 IMG_6357 IMG_6361 IMG_6366 IMG_6368Tuesday was also Finn’s last soccer lesson for this session. He really loved running around and learning a bit about soccer. They also work on motor skills, listening, and various athletic skills too. Some of these photos are fuzzy, but they show him having fun nonetheless.  And at the last lesson Kevin went out and played a game of “sharks and minnows” at the end of the class.  It was a beautiful night so we celebrated with dinner on the patio at Liberty Tavern, where Finn likes to get his picture taken next to the Statue of Liberty. IMG_6370 IMG_6372 IMG_6376 IMG_6381 IMG_6383We’ve been playing outside a fair bit lately since the weather has been so nice. Finn was hitting balls off the tee and after a bit we decided to pitch to him.  He has a really solid swing (and an accurate throw for his age too!) and made contact several times with the ball. I took a video and he missed the ball the first video I shot, so I figured I would take another.  And here is what happened:

Kevin was fine, Finn was pretty concerned and stood there like a statue for a minute until we told him it was OK and that Daddy was fine. For the next several night during prayers Finn would pray “thank you for Daddy not getting hurt and next time maybe he covers his face or gets out of the way”. We’ve considered submitting to America’s Funniest Home Videos…… 🙂

Finn ~ 1 week

DSC_0402We have had a nice first week at home! Kevin has had the week off work so he has been around with us the whole time. We have had several visits including our good friend and Pastor, James and Laura, and our good friend Megan.  My mom has been quite helpful and made us wonderful dinners.  Nursing is taking me some time to perfect, let’s say, and Kevin is being quite the trooper helping me get it all figured out. He gets Griffin ready and gives him to me for the feeding, then takes him when I’m finished. Kevin has also been on “night duty” staying up or sleeping with Griffin in his nursery while I sleep in our bed. That has been wonderful and allowed me to get an hour or two of peaceful, non-worry sleep! We each sleep when we can get it!IMG_20130319_075034_761DSC_0324DSC_0745 DSC_0747 DSC_0748 DSC_0746

Wednesday, March 20, was our First appointment at the pediatrician’s office. Griffin checked in at 6 lb 14 oz, up from Monday’s discharge weight of 6 lb 10 oz.  I was a happy momma! It was a fun visit – Griffin spit-up while laying on the exam table, and then when we changed his diaper he peed all over! It was a busy visit, let’s say!  But in the end he checked out great – the doctor said everything looked really good.  My milk came in today – right on time according to all of the books and doctors. And while I was feeding Griffin at 1 in the morning he had his very first audible and non-meconium poop.  I was by myself nursing him in his room and it startled me it was so loud! Then I had a giggle fit for a minute or two as it was just the most loud and unexpected thing! He had the cutest face when he was finished, like he was so happy, it was rather cute. DSC_0314

And don’t worry, we fixed the straps on his legs before we left in the car. We’re newbies, you know!DSC_0311 DSC_0321 DSC_0319 DSC_0317

We hosted a birthday dinner to celebrate Amy’s birthday. Amy, Andy, Graham, and Rowan came over along with my mom and dad. My parents prepared a lovely dinner and then we had dessert and present time. It was a fun evening and there were a couple of times I was laughing so hard I was in pain, literally, as you can see below.  Griffin slept in his carseat/stroller through the whole thing!DSC_0325 DSC_0339 DSC_0334 DSC_0341DSC_0734 DSC_0732

When Kevin changed Finn’s diaper at 6 am on Thursday, (his 6th day) he noticed that his umbilical cord had fallen off! That seemed pretty early to me, as most everything we had read said 10-14 days, and when we were at the Pediatrician’s office on Wednesday mentioned the same time frame.  But it looked good.  My mom came down to help out and it has been wonderful as she has stayed the night too. My dad also also been a few times and they have made us some delicious meals! My parents left Thursday morning to head home for a few days and Kevin’s parents came later that evening to visit. We enjoyed a nice dinner with them.IMG_20130319_232716_181 IMG_20130319_231322_632DSC_0749 IMG_20130319_214531_969 DSC_0791DSC_0379 DSC_0753 DSC_0393 DSC_0388

On Friday, Kevin had to go in to work for a bit so it was the first stretch of time where I was home alone with Finn. He did great (and so did I!). He ate and slept the entire time – I mean, really, what else would a baby do? I had to head in to my doctors office for a follow up. Turns out I have a urinary tract infection from the catheter, not all that uncommon. I am on some antibiotics for the next several days. My lower legs and feet are also crazy swollen, I guess that happens sometimes after delivery and my doctor wasn’t overly concerned about it. It is the craziest thing ever as I can barely wear flip flops!IMG_20130319_201406_658

Friday was also the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament so we dressed Finn in his OSU attire (the first clothing we bought when we found out he was a boy!) and got him game ready.DSC_0398Millcreek sent a lovely fruit and flower basket along with a box of chocolates – it was so very thoughtful. And here are some other photos from our first week at home!

Check it out, they are all pretty beat 🙂IMG_20130323_095321_392 DSC_0786 DSC_0785 DSC_0784
