August 2022

August means it’s family vacation time! This year we went to Lewes, Delaware along with Mom, Dad, Amy, Andy, Graham, Rowan and Greta for a nice week at a lovely home in a neighborhood with amenities. A social area with a couple of pools, workout room, tennis courts, walking paths and such was all within walking distance. We enjoyed many a trips to the pool and hot tub.

And as with each and every vacation we spent time in line for ice cream 🙂 These cones were ginormous!

We went to Funland which as the name reveals is full of arcade games, rides, and fun things for kids and adults. Griffin absolutely loved collecting tickets and redeeming for things at the ticket counter.

This is one of my favorite pics of the boys. Classic candy necklaces and happy smiles.

We visited Rehoboth Beach for a brief walk and to dabble our feet in the water. The waves were super rough and I was a nervous wreck! The beach was so crowded with people but no one really in the water as it was a red flag on this particular day. We even met up with the cousins for a bit on the beach before heading back to dry land and a stop at the ice cream shop. I was happy to be on dry land!

This trip is so nice each year for the kids to be able to hang out so much. TV time, games, some sports mixed in. Even though we live nearby we truly don’t get together very often amid sports and school schedules.

I took each kid on a “date” during our trip. Griffin, in particular, has been needing some one on one time. We drove to Rehoboth and walked the boardwalk, had a pizza lunch, went to Zelky’s Arcade, and Griffin got a henna tatoo – what is wanted to go there for! He was so happy with it.

Each year Mom and Dad graciously watch all of the kids while Kevin and I and Amy and Andy go out on date night. They’ve moved on from English Muffin pizzas when they were little kids to full-size pizzas now that their appetites are so much bigger!  Kevin and I had a delicious dinner at Raas, and Indian restaurant in Lewes. We walked around the little town afterward and perused some cute little shops.

For Family dinner night we headed to Matt’s Fish Camp, only about a 5 minute drive from our house! This was awesome considering traffic in the area could be really heavy and though we didn’t always go far it could take 20-30 minutes to get around. Afterwards we enjoyed a family round of putt-putt.

Bunk beds in the kids room and lots of time at the pool!

Our traditional “cousins” group photo. In this one they are reenacting the photo from when Reid was 3 months old. They are all much bigger now, ha!

Back home it was time to gear up for school. Here are a few pics from our yard. The shrub I’m standing next to was only planted last summer. It has grown a crazy amount in height and looks awesome.

We finally got around to planting the hostas from Mom and Dad in our garden around the patio. We are planting all of the family hostas there including Mighty Finn, Reid All About It, and Megan’s Angel.  It’s taken us awhile but we finally have all of the shrubs and other plants planted in all of the beds in our outdoor patio area. Whew. That was a big check mark.

During the beginning of Covid we bought the boys desks and set up the basement like a classroom. In order to give them more open space in the basement we decided to move their desks to each of their rooms. They’ve really been enjoying them! Reid has been writing and drawing and Griffin’s is full of his cards and he uses it as a workspace to sort and organize.

This summer Reid played T-Ball through I9. He’s definitely growing up and having less frustrating moments and fits. He was so happy at the end of the last game that he earned a medal as well as receiving the season ending trophy.

Griffin’s soccer club has a new 2-year kit and the colors are now black and white. He wasn’t too excited at first, but after picking them up in person and putting them on he’s decided he really likes them and thinks they look sharp.

We also signed Reid up for OUFC Juniors this Fall and he is playing with his buddy Orin. These two have a lot of fun each week. It has worked out awesome that Reid’s practice on Tuesday’s is during the same time Griffin’s is as well. Two for one!

Griffin and Kevin attended a Crew game and had a great time. They met up with buddy Rowan too 🙂

Reidy and I stayed home and had “breakfast for dinner in bed” and watched a show. The best of both worlds for each kiddo.

The start of soccer season arrived and we’ve begun spending lots of time at practices and games. I really love watching Griffin and his buddies play together. And we made to it watch Aidan play in a Varsity game for Berlin and were able to chat with him after the game.

Griffin is also really enjoying hockey. On occasion our neighbor Brian will reach out with a fun extra lesson or practice that he extends to Griffin and other neighborhood kiddos. He even takes them all!

We also signed Reid up to play OYAA soccer this fall as the OUFC is really just skills work and practice but not games. Reid is on team Royal (pre-K). He is excited! We got him a soccer bag as well like his big bro. He’s super cute to watch. He’s either all in or totally distracted as you would expect at 5 years old. But man, when he scores he beams with excitement and a smile!

OUFC Coach Pete has tremendous patience with these kids. I wish we had known about or thought to enroll Griffin in club soccer earlier than we did. The skills Pete is teaching these kids at the age of 5 is so cool! Reid is learning “foot skills” and if any one kid scores too often when they scrimmage he’ll tell them to do a “foot skill” on their way to the goal before they can score again. So fun!

Griffins OUFC U10 Black team was asked to be ball boys for the Olentangy Varsity game one evening. It worked out great where they were able to walk over to the field after practice. Each kiddo received some food (a pretzel or nachos or hot dog and a drink!) and got to stand along the edge of the field and retrieve balls.

In Scouts Griffin is a Webelo this year which means all new scouting gear that is tan/green and no longer blue. Kevin and Griffin attended a campout together at Camp Lazarus in Delaware.

I’ve been trying to be more intentional with one on one kiddo time. Griffin and I went on a date to the movie theater where he chose to see Minions: The Rise of Gru. It was a cute movie.

One night I went in to check on Griffin and I found this – his light on, shining on a sports card on his desk. This kid just absolutely loves sports. Sports players, teams, games – he is full of information. He knows more than Kevin or I about any of it!

August also means Back to School time. This year Griffin will be in 4th grade and has Mrs. Price as his teacher. We went to the Open House to check out his room, find his desk, and meet Mrs. Price. We ran in to a bunch of buddies too :).

Night before the start of school trip to Graeter’s with our neighborhood crew.

Prepped our first day of school outfit the night before!

Traditional first day of school pancakes by Daddy.

Look at these kids all getting so big. Last year at Tyler Run for Cooper and Ella! Dewey and Jay in 1st, Miles in 3rd, Griffin and Cole in 4th. Reid in Pre-K – next year will be  in this photo as a kiddo headed to Tyler Run!

Donuts and OJ on the patio before the first day of school.

Lisa was home on maternity leave this year so she was able to join in the fun with Myla! She’s typically at school, as a teacher on the first day shenanigans.

My date with Reid took us to the same place – the movie Minions: The Rise of Gru. This kid loves movies and popcorn.

We’ve really enjoyed spending hours upon hours outside on our patio. We gather every chance we can for dinner, with neighbors, or just to watch a movie or sports.

These PJ’s are classic. They have worn them all-year-round since November 2019. They used to be so big and long on Griffin and Reid and now look at those ankles! They are favorites!

We also got to go to meet the teacher morning at NPCA for Reid. Lilly joined us also and Reid did the traditional handprint on the class canvas.

August means neighborhood block party too. Another fun night with friends and this year the bubble truck!

Griffin loves to go to the card shop. He would go every.single.day if we would take him. This week was a special treat to be able to go and meet famous baseball player Jose Rijo who played a majority of his career for the Cincinnati Reds!

Look at what is missing from this kiddos mouth! Reid lost his first tooth! We are not sure, however, where it went! It seemed to have disappeared and he didn’t really realize he lost it. Lilly and Reidy made a tooth out of clay to leave for the tooth fairy!

August 1-31, 2020

Going through all of the photos and looking back at August – we had a really fun month! Soaking in the sun with lots of time at the pool with friends and our final swim lesson. One of the days was only in the high 60’s so the kids enjoyed the hot tub for the first time. That was quite a treat.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that I used to grow plants. Seems like a former life! I have enjoyed having a garden again this yet but find that I am terrible at regularly watering our patio planters and garden beds. Argh! But we have enjoyed a good harvest of cucumbers, red, yellow, and green peppers, and a few yellow squash and zucchini. I didn’t realize how susceptible zucchini are to blossom end rot – well we had our fair share of that this year! We’ve been adding the veggies to our Hello Fresh dinners.

After nearly 6 years of not having the pantry doors trimmed out since our kitchen remodel, Kevin and I teamed up to get it done! He was measured and cut all the trim and I painted it; then he put it in. Yay! One thing off the list.

We’ve also been finishing up the porch since returning from vacation. The carpenters trimmed out all of the windows, both the skylights and the wall windows, they finished the ceiling beam, and painted it all white. We decided to put in a wood laminate floor to make it feel a bit more finished. We chose a light grey, which, along with the white walls makes it feel very clean and bright. We did some touch ups, caulking, and then put together the new sectional couch and table and now it’s ready to be enjoyed.

Griffin’s upper tooth has been sooooo wiggly yet he doesn’t want to have it pulled! One night I was worried he might choke on it in his sleep and Kevin was looking at it – and surprisingly pulled it. Griffin was pretty upset as he wasn’t expecting it  hence the teary eyes :(. But in the end, he was looking forward to the tooth fairy visiting later that evening.

Here are a few other random photos of our month – super cute cowboys playing around the house, Reidy wearing his oversized Camp B shirt, our family adventures to Rita’s and Culvers on our bikes.

Griffin was invited to his 1st grade friend, Kara’s, birthday party. It was to be a socially distanced drive by – but when we arrived people were in the driveway. We had our masks on so we went up for a quick hello. It was really sweet to see how much these friends enjoyed being able to see each other in person. They played a quick game of hide and seek, colored in the driveway, and enjoyed popsicles. It was a really hot afternoon.

We had left a driveway gathering in our neighborhood (our driveway actually, lol) to head to the birthday drive-by and were gone longer than we anticipated. So on our return home we picked up pizza for all the kids to have outside while watching the CBJ game that Brian setup in their driveway. These kids have so much fun together. Before long they were all playing hockey and each had gone home to get their jerseys to wear. We’re really thankful to have such a great pod of neighborhood friends. Both kids and adults enjoy hanging out together and it’s provided some sense of normalcy during the times of Corona.

Our neighbor, Karla, had organized a private rental of Sky Zone for our neighborhood crew. We were able to have the entire place to ourselves for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. The kids had an absolute blast and left there a sweaty mess! Everyone wore their masks (other than Reid who takes his off after a short bit, and baby Abbie).

Later that day was our socially distanced neighborhood Block Party. Chrissie arranged for the Pitabilities food truck and Lyndsey arranged for Kona ice. It was mostly our regular crew of neighbors who attended and a few others as well. The adults wore masks and spaced out in Chrissie and Scotts driveway and yard as well as Don & Beth Maxwells yard. Beth makes the most wonderful and perfect looking desserts that she made for the gathering. She and Don are in their late 80’s and are just the most fun couple. They participate in everything before and during Corona (socially distanced and masked) and comment on all the facebook posts our neighborhood crews make. Since our kids play together regularly we allowed them to play and sit together without wearing their masks. We were able to meet new neighbors who just moved in within the last week, Katy & Eric Deister, who are expecting a little boy in early November.

On August 28th we took the boys to our first inside-dining experience since early March. We went to Bd’s Mongolian Grill where Reid ate not 1, but 2 orders of Mac and Cheese. Griffin had chicken tenders and the other kids created their own made-to-order dishes. The boys did great sitting together at the table and not touching things. Kevin and I were both a bit nervous as it was our first time sitting inside, but it turned out fine and it was nice to do something “normal”.

We’ve gone to Nocterra a few times where we’re able to sit outside at picnic tables and enjoy some relaxing. They’ve partnered with a local Powell company called Sharecuterie, makers of grazing boards and boxes, that you can have delivered to Nocterra on Monday’s for free. We decided to try it out and it was delish! Tons of fun sweet and savory things in our grazing box that we shared with Lisa and Brian in celebration of their 2 year wedding reception-iversary, lol.

I finally scheduled the boys dental checkups after much delay. I was nervous that they would both have cavities and wasn’t sure how Reid would do as he is very shy and apprehensive in new or uncertain situations. Both boys did really well when it was their turn in the chair. Griffin, unfortunately, had 2 cavities – each between teeth – which makes me feel like a terrible mom as I am not a good regular flosser for these boys, nor do I remind them to do it! So – we will be working on that! Reid had a perfect checkup, no cavities.

After the dentist we had a little fun visiting the new pedestrian bridge in Bridge Park. It gave this mama quite a test of my nerves! I held both of their hands tight – even though there are wires and rails, I get pretty freaked out these days about heights and especially with Reid in situations like these. But we walked across from one side to the other where the boys did a little running around. Then we headed back over the bridge and went home. Whew!

I’m not sure why I didn’t really put much thought into a workspace for Griffin to do Distance Learning, but about 2 weeks before school started I began to think we needed to have a dedicated workspace for Griffin. That began a total basement cleaning/purging/painting party and the quest for desks (which by the way are in short supply everywhere since everyone in the world is looking for desks for kids to learn from home!). As it turns out, Lexi broke her foot at a horse show and needed to have the week off work. The timing actually was perfect as I was forced to stay home with the kids, which enabled me to get the basement complete. The kids built a lot of forts and kept themselves busy for a few days. I NEVER would have gotten it done on time otherwise; it was a much larger and time consuming project that I had anticipated. In the end, we have new white walls, found desk parts at IKEA, and turned the kids side of the basement into a classroom. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.

We were able to stop at Tyler Run and pick up the school supply kit that I had ordered for Griffin. He was excited to be able to go to school and see it! And when we got home the boys each organized their school supplies. So much joy in school supplies!

While we see a lot of our neighbors, we haven’t seen many of our friends in what seems like forever. Thankfully, we were able to connect with the Manning’s one evening at Nocterra. We had so much fun just sitting around and talking!

After five years, we have finally arranged to have Memorials placed at our cemetery plots in the Dublin Cemetery. We’ve ordered our Armstrong family stone as well as Nathan’s marker. We started this process in July and it is pretty much a slow-going-thing. Coordination between the cemetery and the stone company is not so efficient! And then the weather has to be just so, so that the cement footers can be dug out and then poured. We stop by occasionally to check the progress. So far, the footer has been poured for Nathan’s marker, but only the foundation has been dug for the family stone.

Random photo of me outside enjoying coffee in one of my favorite mugs – a painting of Griffin’s from 1st grade 🙂

We had fun at the Bethune’s to celebrate Rowan’s 9th birthday. Nine, what? Not sure how everyone is growing up so darn fast, but it seems to be happening despite my best efforts to slow time down. Rowan had an all-things-Pokemon party complete with an awesome Pokemon cake made by Amy as well as homemade Pokemon cookies. Reid was in sugar heaven. Rowie received a hover board and was already demonstrating excellent skills. He allowed Griffin to try it out and he, of course, thought it was pretty sweet.

Lexi invited us to one of her horse shows, which was local in Marysville. We headed up about mid-morning and thought we’d be there until mid-afternoon. As it turns out we were there until 10 pm! But it was such a fun time we couldn’t leave! We were able to see Lexi compete with Tango in several events and the boys were enamored with petting, feeding, and riding Tango. Pretty sure Griffin wants a horse now, lol. It took Reid a bit to warm up, but then he was all-things-Tango. Lexi’s Mom and Dad were there and we enjoyed spending several hours talking with them throughout the day. Others from Lexi’s barn were there too, including some she gives riding lessons to, so it was neat to see her in her element. She really helps kids boost their confidence.

We’ll end with a crazy goofy pic of silliness in the basement and the kids riding Tango all by themselves with Lexi’s lead. They had so much fun!

June 25, 2017 ~ 5 weeks

Reid continues to grow well and bring us smiles every day. He is a great cuddler and I love just looking at him and wondering what goes through his mind.

Griffin used to sleep in this exact same position! Reid went to the doctor for his 4 week well check this week where he checked out great! Dr. Wilde remarked that his big belly and chubby cheeks are the telltale signs of a growing and thriving baby. He did get one shot in his thigh – the poor guy turned beet red and did the whole no-sound-making-angry-crying face for a minute or two before he calmed down and then he was just fine. He weighed in at 10 pounds 15.6 ounces (we had guessed 11 pounds at home for this visit so we were close!) which is the 78th percentile.  He was 22.5″ long (92nd percentile) and his head circumference was 40 cm (99th percentile).  We have ourselves a super healthy and big baby! We did have some concerns at this appointment as Kevin had noticed a marble-like lump off to the side under his right nipple last week. As it turns out it is a normal thing in breast-fed babies. Something about hormones from the mother….I’m just glad it is nothing to worry about and it seems to be going down already since last week when Kevin discovered it. He is really a happy and content baby a majority of the time. There have been some times though that I wonder if he has a bit of reflux or issue with something I’ve eaten. So I discussed that with the doctor who asked if he spits up much. I told him he hardly ever spits up and so he mentioned silent reflux when the baby may have some reflux and it is most noticeable when he’s feeding as it would arch his back, be really fussy, and pull off while he’s eating.  Learning about that made me question if he does have a bit of reflux because he has done that at times, but the more I think about it I think in his case he just has a fair bit of gas as he will burp or toot and then calm down. He also has baby acne, which I’ve wondered if it is truly acne or a reaction to breastmilk (or a factor in something I’m eating). So I’m hoping both his complexion and gas get better and I’m working on not worrying about them! This week Reid’s right eye was also oozing some yellow sleepies. I’m pretty sure he has a clogged tear duct so I’ve been massaging that and hoping it will clear up soon.  One of the projects on my list has been to repurpose the loft into a more usable space and also less of a junk collecting area. This week I moved all of the leftover wood (blue boxes) from the middle of the wall down into the corner and I also moved my craft/work table up against the wall so the room is more open. We are going to convert the existing storage bookshelf from craft and miscellaneous storage into kids storage and also move the identical storage shelf from the family room up to the loft. I think Griffin will really enjoy having a carpeted playspace and Kevin and I will enjoy having the kids toys (read that as at times messy area) up in the loft. We are gradually moving toward improving our family room area so it will become a place where we spend our time as right now we hardly ever use it! This week Kevin interviewed for his job as he had updated he resume and had to reapply for his current position. The state’s fiscal year begins each July 1st and this year Kevin is hoping to change the company he uses as a pass through for billing. So, I bring that up as he wore a tie to work for his interview. He looks so handsome, eh? Luckily a friend snapped this photo of him and he sent it to me as a typical work day doesn’t involve ties!We enjoyed a quick dinner followed by family movie night on Friday.  It was awesome –  we were all snuggly and I loved that I was in bed at 8 pm, lol! We watched Trolls, which Griffin really loved. It had him up dancing and I loved watching that the best!
Saturday’s mean t-ball time! The kids this week were feeling more comfortable and getting the hang of how things work. It made for a smoother game where we made it through each of the batters twice in an inning and were able to play two innings this week. Each week there is a sportsmanship value that the coach teaches the kids and this week it was about sharing. At the end of the game the coach awards a player a medal for demonstrating the value and this week Griffin was awarded the medal for sharing! It was so appropriate as he is wonderful at sharing with others. Each time he makes a craft he wants to give it away to someone, or he gets a snack and will share it with someone, he regularly shares toys, and so on. I was super happy for him and I could tell he was proud that he had been given the medal by Coach Abigail.
Another fun Saturday afternoon spent with Cole and Cooper, complete with Mr. Brian making them all lunch! Brotherly snuggles before we headed to the Powell Festival at Village Green Park. It was a beautiful night to be outdoors listening to live music, having dinner, and watching Griffin enjoy the kids play areas.  Kevin pressure washed the porch and patio over the weekend and it looks a-m-a-z-i-n-g! The floor is so clean and the patio is also weed free as he used the flame thrower and burned them all up! On Sunday we had a neighborhood block party that we helped organize along with 3 of our other neighbors. Our neighborhood hadn’t had one in a few years and we thought with the turnover we’ve had in the ‘hood and the new kids and families it would be good to have a gathering. Kevin was the grill master and we setup the bounce house in Brian’s yard, along with other outdooor games. We had a decent turnout and it was nice to meet new neighbors and others who’ve been here a long time but that we just don’t know!  Check this guy out at almost 5 weeks filling out his new 3 month outfit from Grandma Beilstein.  So big! Lily always getting comfortable on the couch. I’m not sure how we’re going to teach her not to get up on the furniture once we replace our awful couch someday! This week we made impressions of Reid’s hand and feet. They turned out really well, though we did have to round the bottom of the footprint. We had planned to have them be the same length but it turns out his feet are longer than his hands :). Griffin really loves to learn and has shown an interest in numbers and letters. He regularly asks what the letters he puts together spell and he’s been doing some addition here and there. He also really likes matching the written number to the number of objects or coming up with words that end in certain letters, for example, “at” (cat, bat, pat, rat, etc).  Oh Brutus, he’s just killing me some days. He is the sweetest dog, but he definitely needs more attention and exercise that he’s been receiving lately. This week while rearranging the loft I was vacuuming as I was moving furniture around so the cord was all over the floor. He and Lily were laying on the floor playing with each other and I looked at them and realized he had chewed through the vacuum cleaner cord.  Ugh!  Killing me. He’s been ruining a couple of items a day sometimes, from Finn’s toys to Kevin’s Keen sandals, to my shoes, Griffin’s shoes, etc. He is all puppy.  This video was put together by Google from various photos that I’ve taken over the years. I thought it was so cute I’m posting for everyone to see, not only the dogs through the years – but look at Finn grow up too!
