Our sweet, stubborn, and sassy Cammie Cam girl

dog photo shoot mansfield October 9-11 2010 (11)-2

Tonight was a really hard night as we said goodbye to our loving, stubborn, and sassy Cammie girl. This girl saw me through many ups and downs over the last 14 years and 2 months. I think back to her puppy years and the feisty energy she had, often body slamming right in to Hailey! She was the most agile dog I’ve ever had and could catch any ball you threw in her direction. She had a radar for racquet balls – the blue ones were her favorite. She would be able to tell you there was one in the most obscure place – and she was always right!  Cammie Cam was our scared girl, often nervous around loud situations or uncertainty, and sure to put something in her mouth to let her know she was feeling a bit nervous or insecure. She was really active in her younger years but certainly slowed down over the last couple. She loved to lay in the sun and in front of the fire. Our black girl loved the heat. And she was the most amazing swimmer. She absolutely loved going for a play date at the pond and fetching sticks. She would regularly leap off the edge of the pond and into the water to fetch a stick – she could catch some serious air. Since we lost Hailey just over two years ago, Cameron and Lily have  stuck close together. Her hearing and eyesight remained amazing despite her age.  Not so much in recent years, but back in her younger days we would go on countless car rides to the pet store, treats at Starbucks, vacations and long weekends to Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, mom and dad’s, etc. We celebrated every birthday together on December 12, complete with party hats, cake, and toys. She always wanted to be around people and as long as she was able would follow you anywhere just to lay down next to you, or lay on the couch! She loved Finn and he loved taking care of her especially over the last few months. He would regularly take her water, help us feed her breakfast and dinner while she laid on her bed, and suggest that the doggies wanted a “special treat” from time to time too.

In October Cam fell down the brown stairs and wasn’t able to walk very well. After taking her to the vet the next morning we learned she likely tore her ACL in her left back knee. She recovered from that remarkably well, but from that point on wasn’t really able to get up and go outside without some help from us. So we’ve been taking her in and out using a towel placed under her belly, in front of her back legs, to give her support. She continued to eat well – she is a lab after all, and her appetite never wavered! As she has gotten older her skin became so thin, that as she wagged her tail so frequently (and hard) she developed sores or open wounds on her tail that would bleed. So we have had her tail mostly wrapped since November. We took her to the vet on Saturday and learned that she would need to have her tail amputated as it was dying from the tip downward and had a pretty large wound. The last couple days she would go from walking mostly ok to not being able to really stand up for much time at all, and even while standing her back legs wavered quite a bit. She became pretty unsteady on her way in and out to go potty and though it wasn’t easy for her she powered through it.

So we celebrate more than 14 years of love, stubbornness, and sass that she gave us. All of the places we’ve gone, the laughs we’ve had, the tears she’s helped comfort, and the sweet part of our family that she was! We are blessed that she was our birdy girl.

December 14, 2014

DSC_0469Wow, I’m finding myself constantly behind these days. But our days have been loaded with activities and we’ve been having a lot of fun!

I was able to take Friday, Kevin’s birthday, off work and I figured it would be fun to have a cookie decorating party in the morning with Finn and Sam. I made the cookies and frosting the night before in hopes of having everything ready to go.  Wow, what a fun and messy time we had as evidenced by the photos 🙂 Finn had lots of taste testing of all the cookie decorations. DSC_0427 DSC_0428 DSC_0430 DSC_0432 DSC_0435 DSC_0437 DSC_0438 DSC_0439 DSC_0451 DSC_0452 DSC_0458 DSC_0460 DSC_0465 DSC_0471 DSC_0473 DSC_0478 DSC_0485 DSC_0486 DSC_0480Later that evening we gathered with family and friends and had a pizza party to celebrate Kevin’s birthday. Unfortunately, I realized after that I didn’t snap a photo of the more than 12 different pizza’s we had from 6 different shops. It was a tasty night, for sure. You’ll just have to believe me. I did get a couple cell phone pics of Kevin blowing out the candles on his devil’s food cake made by yours truly. I’ve been having a lot of fun spending time in our new kitchen testing out lots of new recipes.  The cake wasn’t super impressive, but the frosting was delish!IMG_20141212_202930770_HDR IMG_20141212_202942581 IMG_20141212_202948500 IMG_20141212_201537460_HDR IMG_20141212_201415427 IMG_20141212_200549672IMG_9755 IMG_20141212_200515656 IMG_20141212_200508673 IMG_20141212_200411815_HDR IMG_20141212_203731047_HDR IMG_20141212_203757534 IMG_20141212_203948293And here Finn shows his new skills of racing along the floor on his back. It was actually really cute, he laid down next to Uncle Andy and then realized how he could scoot using his heels – and he was super fast. It was pretty hysterical. IMG_20141212_205112418 IMG_20141212_205122593Our sweet girl Cameron also celebrated her birthday on Friday too. Yep, she and Kevin have the same birthday. Here is our 13 year old girl in her party gear. DSC_0497Saturday we made a surprise visit to see Grandma and Grandpa in Mansfield to visit their churches inaugural Nativity Open House. I believe they had over 160 nativity scenes to view, many from their own collection. Finn quickly found the kids Veggie Tales set! We enjoyed dinner out and some play time at Grandma and Grandpa’s too before heading home to gear up for Sunday’s festivities. IMG_20141213_153958547 IMG_20141213_154653454IMG_20141213_154517046IMG_20141213_201249054 IMG_0951We ended the week with a bang on Sunday with our inaugural Candy Making festivities. I remember from my childhood when my parents hosted other families for a candy making day to make hard-tack candy and buckeyes. All of the kids would come too and help a bit with candy-making and also made some crafts.  Earlier this fall my dad suggested that our newly renovated kitchen would be the perfect place to revive the tradition – and I thought it was a fabulous idea! And here you go – images from the day (sorry for those out of focus!) Unfortunately Amy was sick and wasn’t able to come. It was a long afternoon, turned into night, but we had a great time and all of the kids really enjoyed helping.  I made some notes of things to tweak for next year, and we will be scheduling the date far earlier so we can have it on a Saturday!  We ended up making 6 flavors (6 double-batches) including cherry, lemon, black licorice, buttered rum, sassafras, and cinnamon. Mom and dad had made peppermint a couple days before as the trial run. We also made fudge (which was an interesting experiment and needs some perfecting for next year!) and buckeyes.  And mom prepared several crafts for the kiddos, including reindeer ornaments, jingle bell bracelets, and foam ornaments. Everyone had a lot of fun!IMG_20141214_145247542_HDR IMG_20141214_145305810_HDR DSC_0506 DSC_0511 DSC_0509 DSC_0514 DSC_0524 DSC_0519 DSC_0521 DSC_0525IMG_9827 DSC_0540 DSC_0541 DSC_0546 DSC_0549 DSC_0554 DSC_0556 DSC_0557 DSC_0560 DSC_0562 DSC_0543 DSC_0563 DSC_0564 DSC_0565 DSC_0569 DSC_0571 DSC_0574 DSC_0575 DSC_0577 DSC_0580 DSC_0582 DSC_0583DSC_0499 DSC_0585 DSC_0588 DSC_0590 DSC_0592 DSC_0594 DSC_0604 DSC_0600 DSC_0606 DSC_0608 DSC_0614 DSC_0526 DSC_0527 DSC_0529 DSC_0531 DSC_0533 DSC_053420141220_10553320141220_10544420141220_105618

Finn ~ 51 weeks

DSC_0323_51weeks   It’s been a low-key week around here. My work schedule is picking up some as I have a lot of projects that we are trying to get wrapped up before the spring craze sets in. It’s hard to believe it is that time of year, but it has almost arrived. It is nice to walk around at work and see all of the newly potted production and we have begun to ship on a small scale mostly to the south. Finn and Sam have fun with each other, one usually wanting what the other has. Here they are going back and forth with Sam’s Elmo!DSC_0291 DSC_0292 DSC_0293photo   On Friday and Saturday I attended the women’s retreat put on through our church. It was a nice event, and a lot of the content continues to resonate with me. It was my first overnight away from Finn since he has arrived! I did ok though, and he was totally fine without me (ha! no surprise there!). Kevin’s parents came up to hang out for a bit Friday evening and stayed the night. Grandma and Grandpa brought the fun tunnel that you see Finn crawling through (and daddy playing in) in these photos. They had some fun play time with him and it worked out great that Kevin was able to take Cameron and Lily to the Vet for their yearly appointments Saturday morning while they watched Finn. We’re a bit concerned about all of the growths (lipomas) on Cameron, though she has always had some and as she ages they said it is common for her to have more of them. However, her lymph nodes were slightly enlarged so we are having that looked in to. She’s had a hard time with the stairs and getting up on the couch and we’ve learned she has arthritis pretty good in three of her four legs, so she is going to begin taking Rimadyl which was the medication Hailey had taken for a long time. This aging is no fun!

Finn had a slight fever Saturday evening. Seems as though he is getting another tooth, his lower left, and so far fever seems to be a good indicator that it’s teething time. That makes 7! Enjoy your week – it’s party prep time for us, we almost have a 1-year old on our hands!DSC_0296 DSC_0302 DSC_0313 DSC_0327 DSC_0332 DSC_0333 DSC_0335 DSC_0338 DSC_0343 DSC_0348DSC_0350 DSC_0352 DSC_0358 DSC_0361 DSC_0371 DSC_0379 DSC_0389 DSC_0397 DSC_0402 DSC_0407
