October 1-30, 2020

October was a fun month! We began our first weekend with a Saturday noon soccer game and then headed to Mansfield for our annual apple picking trip. We stopped at Mom and Dad’s to drop off Brutus and then headed to Apple Hill. We arrived to learn they were picking Honeycrisp, which is one of our favorites. At first we were not too impressed as we were having to pick apples out of the tip-tops of the trees. Having been blueberry farmers who often gave the advice “start at the end of the row and work your way back” you think we would have known what to do, ha! But sure enough, as we walked closer to the back of the field they were far more plentiful. We still had fun hiking those boys into the trees to pick the highest apples they could. Griffin is getting to be quite the man to hoist at 55+ pounds. Even “little” Reidy checks in at 34+ pounds! We picked up some apple donuts and cider from the shop too.

Then we headed back to Mom and Dad’s and I’m pretty sure Kevin and Dad headed to Best Buys to pick out a new computer for Mom. Yikes, my memory is failing me! Her computer was bulging from having had an overheated battery at some point. Kevin was able to get her new computer all setup and the programs and files moved over. We ended up spending the night and had a nice pancake breakfast the next morning. Griffin enjoyed helping make the pancakes with Grandpa.

While Distance Learning isn’t “easy”, it certainly provides a solid routine to each day. Griffin usually has 3-4 live meetings with his teacher each day. A morning meeting where they complete “morning writing work”. An afternoon meeting, where she typically reads them portions of a chapter book and they review what they will be doing for their afternoon work. Two days a week he has a reading group (with 2 other friends) and a different two days of the week he has math group (orange group with the same 2 friends as reading). Griffin really likes the live meetings. He can be shy sometimes. He has really good manners and keeps his mic muted so people can’t hear the background noise (not everyone does this!). He does a pretty good job staying focused, but can easily get distracted when Reid is around or if Reid is doing any sort of play or electronics. He is really great at Math and doing quite well in reading too. Writing is an area that Griffin struggles with wanting to complete. He and I have had numerous frustrating interactions when I ask him to double-check his spelling (of simple sight words or words I know that he should be able to spell) or check his work for the three this he is expected to know (punctuation, capital letter of the first word of the sentence, and finger spacing). When I point out anything his confidence tanks and he gets so angry and frustrated it often leads to tears and loud voices. I’m struggling with how to help him. This is where Distance Learning is so hard! While he submits work each day, it’s not the same as submitting work in a classroom. That being said, he can navigate Schoology, his OLSD portal, and the computer in general in such awesome ways. His know-how to get around between teams meetings, apps used live during live meetings, apps to complete his assignments, and so on is cool to see. Miss Peacock has such a great voice and is really encouraging in all her live meetings. We are really happy with her. She has twice had “supply pick ups” at a local park to get school supply bags full of things for the kids. Notebooks, booklets of work papers, a pumpkin, and so on. A little “perk” is getting to see her live in real life and play with virtual friends in real life at the park for a short bit!

Griffin’s 2nd grade pictures arrived and we think they look stellar. Look at our handsome guy 🙂 Lexi is doing really well managing both boys during the day. I know I’ve said this before, but it is taxing. Trying to ensure Griffin is on task, while keeping Reid entertained and not as a distraction is the real deal. And she is very encouraging and affirming – two things I’m working on improving 🙂

The weather has been pretty great lately, allowing us to still enjoy outdoor times when possible. One evening we did a last minute trip to Nocterra and while we were there Kevin was talking to his Mom. Reidy wanted to get on and chat with Grandma and it was pretty funny. He kept telling us to “shhhhh, he’s talking”. It was comical.

Soccer day Saturday’s have been pretty great – both weather-wise and just the enjoyment in watching Griffin play. He has been focused and determined. He came up with his own motto “speed, strength, confidence” (which you may have also noticed Lexi put in the classroom on the Affirmation Station Wall) and he is living it out. This boy was just born with sports in his blood. He knows so many professional players names and numbers: hockey, football, soccer. He knows sports scores of games that are either in progress or have ended. He knows when his teams are going to play next. He just follows all things sports.

Mini-me, Reid, likes to wear all the same things as Griffin and play soccer leading to and from the game each week. During the game, he couldn’t care less what’s happening on the field. He just wants a “snack and a show” and settles himself into the chair. See below for a quick series in Reid’s emotions and energy levels, lol.

Despite all the Covid yuck of 2020, we wanted to keep as many traditions going as we felt we could do safely. We took the boys to Young’s Jersey Dairy to pick pumpkins and ride the farm wagon. Grandpa Armstrong met us there and treated us to lunch after putt putt – thanks Grandpa! Reid rode the kiddie ride and Griffin went down the slide a few times. All in all, a pretty “normal” experience with lots of hand sanitizer and mask wearing going on.

Lexi brought pumpkins for the boys and Griffin also had his pumpkin from Miss Peacock so one afternoon they took to carving them. Note the masks: the kids thought they stunk. Oh dear.

We had quite a busy day one afternoon with eye appointments for Griffin and me, followed by a quick stop at the cemetery to check the progess (it.is.sooo.slow….but at least now there is grass), then a fun and brief visit from Haya and baby Summer before heading to the Boo-through at Tyler Run. The school and sponsors put on a “drive through” trick or treat event so both kids and Lexi decorated the car (inside as it was horribly yucky cold and wet weather) and wore their costumes. They each came home with all kinds of swag.

My morning walks before work are something I’ve really come to enjoy. While it is brief and there are many days I feel like putting it off, I’m always glad once I do it. I go a mile or 1.25 miles usually at most, as I have my timeline down to what I can get done in order to arrive at work between 7:55 and 8, without getting up super early. The early morning walks in the dark are rather enjoyable and provide some beautiful sights. It’s sometimes serene and I don’t see another person and other days I may see four or five others out at 7 am. I wouldn’t be keen on doing it without my Brutes though!

We needed to dig up and replace our Rising Sun Redbud and by the time we got around to doing it one Saturday, it was about 5 pm. We had an hour left of daylight and were able to squeeze it in, but our picks aren’t very great! Our amsonia is beautifully colored and so much more prominent without the larger tree there. It’s hard to believe that tree had only been there 4 years and had put on so much growth. It was kind of a beast to dig out! But we got it done and now have our baby one in place. Hoping this one grows as quickly as the last, minus the splitting!

We signed Griffin up for Cub Scouts again this year, so he is in the Wolf pack. It’s a small set this year, currently only 3 boys. They’ve met a couple times at parks to complete requirements while being able to maintain distance and wear their masks. He’s also selling popcorn, though mostly online or ordering-to-be-delivered-to-you-later; no in person sale from inventory this year. So it’s not as fun, but he still sold so much and was happy he beat his last years sales.

We purchased a Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica Northern Splendor) and a Chinese Elm (Elmus parviflora Allee) for our backyard to replace where we’ve taken down more than 5 of our blue spruces. While not evergreen, these trees will provide a nice screen and beautiful fall color. Thankfully Mom and Dad had just purchased a new-to-them truck (and quite a spiffy one I might add) and when I randomly called from Oakland while we were tree shopping to ask if we could borrow their truck, they offered to just drive down. So about an hour and a half later Mom and Dad were there and Kevin and Dad headed to Oakland to pick up the trees. We got two Rising Sun’s for our neighbors Sam and Carlene as well, so altogether they brought 5 trees home and delivered the two down the street. We had a nice dinner of City BBQ on the porch. Whew, that was an unplanned busy day! It took us about a week or so to get them planted, but when we got around to it we had two helpers; Reidy and Brutes. Both constantly in the mix. Griffin was off playing with neighborhood friends.

More soccer fun followed by fun new sweet trips from a really atypical visit to Kroger. Atypical in that I hadn’t been to one in ages, so I picked up all the fun treats you can’t find at Aldi 🙂 We also recently taste-tested the chocolate chip cookies from cousin Graham’s school fundraiser. They passed with flying colors and didn’t even cool before being consumed.

Work for me has been super crazy busy lately. We’re working on our 2021 budget, staff planning, hiring new employees, including my newest hire: Head of Human Resources and Employee Experience , filled by none other than George’s daughter-in-law Shaina Pealer – who is going to rock this role. She worked at Millcreek earlier this year on “Special Projects” (read that as many things I needed help in getting done!) and she was super-great. She worked for us while looking for a job since having relocated to Columbus from NYC. She found a job and departed at the end of May. In late September I learned that she had been let go from her job (which was in the fashion/retail industry which has been hard hit by COVID) and it was simultaneous with Management meetings we had been having regarding staffing, company needs, long-range planning, and so on. When we were discussing hiring someone for HR, George mentioned he may know of someone and asked if we wanted to know who it was.  Well, of course we did – so he filled us in on Shaina. We jumped at the chance to recruit her. I met with her twice out of the office and offered her our new role. It is a huge job to fill and while she doesn’t have any technical HR experience, she is a lawyer who has also worked in large companies with great HR departments (Bloomingdales) and has so much experience form the employee side. She started on October 19th, right in the craziness of Insurance renewal season, hiring other open positions, and all kinds of things) and she is crushing it. So looking forward to streamlining the responsibilities of HR from being shared work of me and up to 5 or 6 others (all in different ways) into a single dedicated role. Yay! I may work my way out of a job, lol. Just kidding of course. This will give me time to do less of the daily action items and more of the larger planning and operational activities. At least that is the plan.

Whew. All of that to say since I’ve been working later and can’t always make it home at 5, when I come home, this is often what I see. Kevin let’s Lexi go usually around 5 each day, but he still works until 6:30 or so. It’s a challenge when your company is based out of Mexico, on central time, and they also start their work days later than we do in the US (9am)! Griffin is usually playing with friends or watching a show/playing a video game and Reidy is with Kevin in “his office chair” watching his own show (and as you can see, about to fall asleep). Little man is at the age where he doesn’t want a nap, but can often use one.

On Halloween morning, we got up and headed out early to go see cousin Rowan play his last soccer game of the season. We weren’t able to get to any of the earlier ones as they were at the same time of day as Griffin’s, but wheweee, it was a brisk fall morning! The sun was bright and the grass was crisp with frost! But it was a lovely morning to bundle up and cheer for our Crew player, #12. He had an awesome goal that we got to see. We’re thankful to live in the same town and go to our cousins events – though we hardly see each other often enough, especially in Covid times.

Later that day it warmed up really nice and the boys were outside raking leaves with Kevin playing in shorts and tshirts. Our driveway was a meeting spot for pizza and other snacks prior to trick or treating with our neighborhood friends. I got a little bit crafty and made a “healthy” item of ghosts/strawberries/grapes to go with our pizza. Each year we get a neighborhood pic, and these kids are growing up fast!

Ella the dinosuar, Eli is Darth Vader, Abbie is a robber, Miles is Spiderman, Hadi as a Samurai, Griffin as a Knight, Georgia as Maleficent, and in the front row: Jay as Spiderman, Abbie as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Reid as Spiderman, and Dewey as Hulk. Missing Cole and Cooper this year who were with their Mom.

And the adults of course: Kevin, Scott, Amy, Mike in the back and Lyndsey (with Honey), Megan, Chrissie, Karla, and Alex in the front. We missed Brian and Lisa, the Stephens, and the Serra’s this year (who had sick kids, not Covid!)

It ended up being a beautiful night for a walk in the neighborhood. Kevin and I got split up, as I stayed with Reid and the two of us went door to door with Abbie and Chrissie. Kevin went with Griffin and the big kids. There were a lot more people handing out candy than I had imagined. I even met a couple neighbors I hadn’t previously met. Fun night filled with so-much-candy.

And here are a few videos from this month. Soccer games, neighborhood football pickup game, and playing in the leaves.

July 16-31, 2019 ~ Florida & Tennessee Summer Vacation

Summer vacation 2019 – woohoo! We look forward to this week every year. I love the time with family, a slower pace than usual, and lots of time in a pool. I also love that the kids are creating memories with Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Amy, Uncle Andy, and their cousins. So, thanks Mom and Dad for treating us to this trip and for the wonderful memories!

Our home this year in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, had an awesome layout where the kids room was the third floor, two sets of bunks, and a side play room with chairs, a couch, games, and a tv. Reid had his own room, which at first I was kind of sad about as he missed out on more cousin time, but it ended up being a great thing as he was able to get plenty of great sleep.

I will warn you – there are a ridiculous number of photos and videos in this post. You would think after so many years of putting posts together I would learn to make them shorter and less work, but I seem to be going in the opposite direction. I love to be able to go back through old pictures or look something up – so as per usual I’ve included a crazy amount of pics.

We drove this year, leaving Friday morning and driving to Fultondale, Alabama on day 1. The dogs were sad to see us go and not quite sure why they couldn’t come. Before we left they laid there looking mopey. It was a pretty “easy” drive. We took the Volvo, had a few fun games to play in the car, and stopped along the way including one rest stop where we saw a space rocket (?). Saturday morning we got up early and had breakfast at the Hampton Inn followed by a dip in the pool. We weren’t in too much of a hurry as our drive to Santa Rose was to be about 3.5-4 hours. As it turned out we ran in to quite a bit of traffic from Birmingham to Florida so the drive took much longer than we anticipated. We arrived around 5 pm and quickly unloaded the car and moved in. Of course about 20 minutes prior to arriving Reid fell asleep in the car. The kids both did really well with the drive. They slept very little, perhaps an hour nap each day/trip, and we enjoyed looking for different license plates. Nashville was great for finding a ton of them – including Alaska!

Mom and Dad made a delicious spaghetti dinner and afterwards gave the kids matching tie-dyed swim shirts and towels. They were all so excited to see what was in the bag and they hit the pool for a quick dip before dark.

On the first morning, Kevin woke at the crack of dawn and was out the door to The Donut Hole and Wal-mart before 7 am. His internal wake-up alarm got him up early most every day of vacation! He brought home some tasty donuts that everyone enjoyed and got our shopping done before wallyworld got too crazy. The kids came down in their vacation pj’s, this year looking like a crew of bandits! Sadly, I realized I didn’t get Reid any pjs! Don’t know where my brain was, but we made up for it and got him some blue-striped pj’s while we visited Seaside on our family night.

Our vacation home was in a gated community this year which had a wonderful infinity pool at the club area. There were also boardwalks through the marshes and beautiful views as the neighborhood was surrounded by a nature preserve. It wasn’t as convenient to go to the beach, it was a short drive and full parking lot so we parked along the roadside, which turned out to be fine just a bit of a walk to get to the beach.

Another morning Kevin work up early and got started making “The Breakfast”. It was a tasty start to the day. We went to the beach twice during the week. The kids loved body boarding and playing in the sand. Griffin didn’t love all the sand in his swimsuit (after having been buried, which he thought was great). The water the first day had lots of seaweed but was still quite clear and pretty. The second time we visited it was much more clear and hardly any seaweed (though lots of tiny dead fish on the shore, which we called sardines whether they were or not!).

Here is our family selfie, followed by the pics Amy took of us taking our selfie, lol. Hers are better!

Our night out for dinner was spent at Chanticleer, a short drive from our house. It was a delicious dinner where we had our own private room which worked out great (even though it was quite loud) for our crew. Afterward, Mom and Dad treated everyone to ice cream at Blue Mountain Creamery.

For Date night, Kevin and I headed out and did some walking at shopping at an outdoor mall. We ended up in Tommy Bahama where we had success finding some dresses for me and shorts and a shirt for Kevin. We headed on to the Vue for a delicious dinner and a great view of the beach. I enjoyed some tasty, fruity, beachy drinks and Kevin tried out the local brews. This is one of my favorite nights, because as we’re out the kids are home with Grandma and Grandpa. Mom and Dad are always great about having some sort of activity to do with the kids. This year, they each colored pictures to give to us when we returned home. They also went on a long walk through the marshes and the neighborhood. Everyone had loads of fun and we loved coming home to the artwork :).

I went on a long 50-minute walk one morning and headed toward the state park down the road from our neighborhood. It was a mile to get there so I wasn’t able to spend too much time there before heading back home. The views were nice, though the Alligator warning signs made me nervous!

For on your own family night we got a bit of a later start, leaving the house at 5 pm once Reid and Daddy were up from their naps :). We headed east on 30A to a place called The Hub. I had found them on Instagram and had been following them for awhile. We had dinner and the kids played a bit on the open lawn area. There was live music and we walked through a few shops. We then headed back towards our house and decided to stop in Seaside, a cute town along 30A with lots of shops. We enjoyed ice cream and shopping. Griffin used his own money to buy a Monster Truck, staying within his budget of $9. Man, it’s hard to find something less than $10 in a toy store in a vacation destination, lol! But I’m proud that Griffin found something that he would enjoy within his budget. He has a Save/Spend/Give piggy bank and had brought money in his Spend pouch for vacation shopping. We got a keepsake for Griffin, a Cheetah lovey, and a pair of cute pj’s for Reid.

Graham, Rowan, and Greta had visited Seaside as well and each gotten a new toy. The kids were so excited the next morning they were up quite early (6:30 am or before!) to play. I heard them talking and playing and went upstairs and found this!  We spent a lot of time at the pool this year, going at least once if not twice a day. We packed lunch or headed home for a quick bite and then went back. Griffin got much more comfortable in the water throughout the week. The difference from day 1 at the hotel to even day 3 at the pool was remarkable. He was working on his underwater skills and loved getting the rockets and shark off the bottom of the pool. Reid wore his floaties and absolutely had the best time on the stairs, where he could walk on his feet, walk with his hands, or swim off the steps to someone nearby. By the end of the week he would just float and swim without any encouragment. They are both little water bugs.

We always try to get an entire family photo while we’re on vacation. This year we were able to get some great ones on the front steps of our house! It was warm and steamy but we pulled it off pretty quickly and got some great shots – thanks to Amy! While there are ton included below, if you look closely you’ll see personalities shine through in the different images :). Pay close attention to eyes and smiles.

Sadly, the week came to an end all too fast! Before we knew it Saturday morning arrived. After the traffic we ran in to (and saw leaving FL on our way down) we gave some thought to spending Saturday night in Florida before heading north, but as it turned out we decided to hit the road early to avoid traffic. We were up at 5:15 am and on the road by 6. We were making great progress and stopped for breakfast around 9 am as we also wanted to check the tire pressure in our rear left tire as the warning light had come one. As it turns out, there was a machine screw in the tire and after two attempts to get it plugged, we ended up needed to replace the tire. Thankfully, this repair shop was just a short distance from the Chick-fil-A we stopped at so the boys and I spent nearly 3 hours there while Kevin was getting it repaired. At one point he came back to Chick-fil-A as it was time for lunch and I didn’t have any money with me since we hadn’t planned on staying there! He came back, we had lunch, and then he and Griffin were walking back to the car shop. While doing so, a police officer stopped and asked them if things were ok and ended up taking them in the police car to the auto shop. Makes for a great memory, and Griffin loved that he got to ride in the car and got a sticker from the police officer.

We arrived in Nashville and stayed at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel for three nights before returning home. That place is crazy huge – like 9 acres indoors with numerous “areas” of rooms, restaurants, shops, etc. It is like a botanical garden on the inside when you walk from one area to another. There is also a boat ride, which we had tickets for but sadly never got around to doing as we spent 2 days in WaterSound, the place they call “not a waterpark, it’s your new happy place”. It is an awesome indoor and outdoor waterpark that you can walk to from your room.  It was very clean, modern, and fun! Since it is in music city, and the park is named WaterSound, every slide, pool, etc., had a name themed after music. Pretty creative names!

While we didn’t need to leave the hotel/resort area I wanted to venture out and see a bit of Nashville. We ventured across the street to the Nashville Palace where we had pub-fare and listened to live music. The musicians had all toured with famous country singers and they were quite good. It was a low-key dinner followed by a trip to downtown Nashville, about an 17 minute drive, to visit the Legendairy Milkshake Shop – another Instagram find. Super cool (and expensive) shakes. It was spendy, but it was fun too and Griffin’s excitement to tear in to his Candy Land milkshake was fun. Kevin created his own Vanilla with a donut (and MMs on the side for Reid), and I had a Cookies N Cream.

On our final night, we enjoyed a sit-down dinner at a nice italian restaurant within the hotel. It sits in one of the Atrium areas. The food was delicious and both boys were so hungry they ate a majority of their pizza.

After dinner we walked around and perused areas of the hotel we hadn’t been to. We were on the hunt for a gift for Cameron for staying at our house with the dogs. We found Cowboys and Angels and before we new it we walked out of there with two cowboys ourselves. We got Griffin and Reid matching cowboy hats and boots. I loved watching them get so excited and I think they look adorbs. Looking forward to wearing these this fall to the fair or various farms we visit :).

We arrived back home Tuesday and I was home from work on Wednesday getting everything back in order. Then on Thursday evening we went to the Kids Fun Run preceding the Irish Festival. This was Reid’s first year and as you can see in the video, he wasn’t too sure at the start. But once he got going he was all in! Griffin, Rowan, Graham, and Greta all ran as well. Afterward we headed to Johnson’s Ice Cream for a sweet treat to celebrate their run. Reid got an extra special, non-ice-cream treat of a sprinkle cone filled with gummies! Lordy, so many gummies.

And here are the videos – be sure to watch the ones from the Kids Dash fun run at the Irish Festival. Reid wasn’t too sure to start! Also, Griffin was getting really good at body surfing this year!

December 30, 2018

The Christmas holiday was a little different for us this year. After being in Mansfield for a few days, we headed back to Powell in the afternoon of Christmas Eve. After a morning of lounging and then all receiving our traditional pajamas (this year we did it around the kitchen table!) we headed back home and readied ourselves for church at NPC. This was the first year we’ve attended our church on Christmas Eve. It was a nice service of songs, a short sermon, and candles at the end. I spent the last 15 minutes perusing the hallways and lobby with Reid as he was operating on full-speed and wouldn’t sit still or be quiet.
After church we headed home and enjoyed a nice family dinner. Then it was off to bed for the kiddos, but not before Griffin helped us get Santa’s cookies and milk ready. We made slice and bake tree cookies from Aldi and set some carrots out for the reindeer too. It was a really late and short night – I went to bed about 2 am!
Christmas morning Griffin came into our room about 7:30. He was excited, but not extremely excited like I thought he might be. We lounged for a few minutes while Daddy went down to feed the dogs. Then we got Reid and headed downstairs! We snapped a few pictures of the boys on the stairs, I love the one of Reid looking at Finn. They were both pretty reserved when they walked in to the family room and saw all of the gifts around the tree. We enjoyed a slow pace of opening gifts. They each took their time exploring their stockings and opening gifts. Reid loved the toothbrush, in particular, and his new bowls. Griffin loved his remote control truck, beanie boos, and dart boards.

After we had opened almost all the gifts we had a quick and tasty breakfast of overnight french toast. Then we headed to the basement to “take a few toys downstairs”. Kevin had setup a new train track and we’d covered the air hockey table and put a bow on it.  I was really surprised at how low-key Griffin was. He thought whatever was under the sheet was for us, not him! Once we uncovered it everyone jumped in and played a couple of games.

Next up, we packed up some things and headed north to Mansfield to continue Christmas with Mom, Dad, and the Bethunes. Graham, Rowan, and Greta were excited to show Finn and Reid their gifts. Then a small bit of chaos ensued while everyone opened more gifts, lol.
Before Christmas Dinner we did another round of family photos. I didn’t include any outtakes here, but believe me there were plenty of cries and crankiness between these great ones. Reid can quickly flip a switch from fussy to happy baby.
Here are several shots of Reid and his funny expressions. As I’ve said before, he’s extremely observant and can mock and behavior, expression, or sound if he feels up to it. He is also quite in to clicking and unclicking his high chair or car seat snaps. He can easily occupy himself for 10 minutes just clicking and unclicking.
With the holidays I’ve enjoyed a bit of a relaxed work schedule. I’ve taken a few days off and the other days gone in a bit later. We enjoyed a nice french toast and sausage breakfast one morning before I left – Hannah joined us too.  We headed to Enon for a couple days for the Armstrong Christmas. This year the Christmas gathering was at Jim and Pat’s house. Not long after we arrived Griffin was pretty excited to open gifts, so we opened them and then played with all the new toys. Griffin also loved playing on Grandma and Grandpa’s mini-trampoline. It’s a good way to expend some energy 🙂
The next day the many of the Armstrongs came to the family gathering. Reid loved playing with everyone and Brutus warmed up to everyone after the first 15 minutes. Â
