We’re about to head on our summer adventure this week! But before we left, Griffin and Reid headed to the zoo on Monday with Jenn. He told me all about how he went through the reptile building and got to pet a snake. We began our vacation by taking Lily and Brutus to Pet Palace in Lewis Center. This was the first time EVER that Lily or Brutus have been boarded. To say the least I was a bit uneasy and worried about it. Kevin had neatly measured out each meal (am/pm) into ziplock bags for each dog and included Lily’s meds in her am pouch. The staff at PP was more than impressed :). We checked in and took them to their “Royal Dog Suite” and I was instantly thinking in my head “this is so small for 11 days!”. There was barely enough room for their dog bed, the bed that’s in the space, and them to stand! As they gave us a brief tour we walked by a really large “room”, which was the “extra large royal suite” that I didn’t see advertised online (where I made the reservation). The kind young man who gave us a tour checked on the availability of the larger “room” and as it turns out we were able to move them to that for all but the last night of our trip. Yay! It will be so much more spacious. I signed up for the webcam (you know me, I like to check on things) and before we even got home they called us to let us know they’d moved them over into the larger room! I think they will be in good hands.
Next up, our trip to the airport! We did the convenient “OH Park” (used to be Thrifty) where they hop in your car and drop you at the terminal, where you can hop right out and check your bags in. With two kids, two car seat, three suitcases, and carryon bags this was the way to go! We had a smooth arrival, easy check-in, and we were on our way to the gate!
We had to split up 2 and 2 for the flight. Kevin was able to install both the seats pretty easily and we were ready for take off. As per usual, Reid didn’t sleep hardly a wink (nor did Griffin). He did pretty well, only a few screams. He thought it was fun to drop his pacifier over the side of his car seat a couple of times. Not so much fun to try to find it! There were a couple of very nice ladies behind us that kept him entertained here and there. The snack cup (and him having control of it and other things) kept him happy.
I just so happened to catch this pic. He didn’t do this but for a quick second. I think he could definitely feel the pressure changing in his ears, but he really wasn’t that bothered. I think he was more tired than anything yet didn’t want to give in and go to bed.
Here I am again, checking in on the doggies who just so happened to be scarfing down their dinner. They are definitely on a different schedule that “normal” but I’m sure they will survive.
We checked in to our hotel (same place we stayed last February) and headed for the pool. Griffin loved the water slide and sprinklers and Reid enjoyed being able to crawl through the water. One reason we chose to stay at the same place is we knew they had a nice daily breakfast! Kevin and Finn went down and brought breakfast to our room the first morning. It was quite a spread. News flash: also quite messy. We decided from here on out we’ll head downstairs for breakfast!
We departed on this vacation with a few ideas in mind, but no schedule set in stone. We decided we’d take it a day at a time. We learned the weather in July is quite stormy! After looking at the radar in the morning, we decided to bite the bullet on the best looking day and head to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. By the time we got dressed, out the door, and at the park it was 10:45 am – but we still got in the park at a good time. We took the ferry over and walked around some before the first round of crazy lightning and thunder. We hung out in the gift shop, bought Reid sunglasses and a stroller fan (did we mention how muggy/hot it is in July?), Griffin a Mickey snap bracelet, and Kevin a hat to be a bit more prepared for the day.
Reid was so tired he was quite the snuggle bug as we were getting ready to go on It’s a Small World ride. Griffin loved this ride last year and immediately wanted to go on it again when we got there this year – so it was the first ride we went to. We used our fast passes which were great! Kevin and I enjoyed watching the expressions of happiness and joy that both boys had during the ride. We tried to capture it some in a video.
After the ride it was pouring rain so we hung out indoors for a short bit before heading to the next ride, which was all in the dark! The pictures aren’t the greatest but they are reminders to us of the fun the boys had 🙂
Next up, a few character visit. Griffin had a great time meeting Goofy, Donald, and Daisy. Reid – not so much. I think by the end of the day we counted that Griffin had ridden 14 rides (some a couple times). We had dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner served family style) where we also ate last year. I guess we are creatures of habit – but when we find something that works – we repeat it! Reid ate about 4 servings of mac and cheese!
Though you can’t hardly tell, Griffin and Kevin are in the front car of the roller coaster as it’s coming through the sign.
We ended the evening with the traditional Fireworks show. It was a pretty late night and definitely a tiring day so we had a lazy morning the following day. Then we decided to find an indoor activity so we went to the Crayola Experience where Griffin made lots of artwork, created his own paper wrappers for crayons, and learned all about the history of crayons.
Back at the hotel we enjoyed more pool time and then we were on our way to Siesta Key to meet up with everyone for a week at the house! Upon arriving it didn’t take long to get everything taken inside, find swimsuits, and hop in the pool for a quick dip! My cousin Missy, her husband Dave, and two girls Lyndsey and Maggie came to visit for weekend so we went out for a big italian family dinner Saturday night. Thanks to Amy for capturing a great photo.
On Sunday morning Kevin and I got up and out of the house for a “walk” with Reid, which turned into breakfast on the patio of The Broken Egg. Yummers! We got there at the perfect time and got a table right away. Then on the way home, we picked up mini-donuts for the rest of the crew.
The weather is kind of crazy with pop up storms but we decided to head to the beach and check it out. The skies were dark and our visit was short before the rain came, but it was fun!
What’s vacation without ice cream? Exactly. So night one, off we walked to Olaf’s to indulge in a sweet treat. Our house was located close to the village area of Siesta Key so we were able to easily walk there.
In other news, we are eager for the re-opening of Jewett/Liberty intersection with the new roundabout. I saw this image on facebook – it is looking good and scheduled to be open before school starts on August 15th. It surely has been a rough summer having to use 315/Powell Road for everything but I think it will be worth it!

What another busy and fun week we’ve had! As you can see, Reid is enjoying the holiday season and his first round of so many fun family traditions. He also had avacado for the first time this week as you can see what remains on his face for this picture. He’s pretty curious about it and is good at picking it up and getting it in his mouth. From there he makes the funniest faces, gags (which I REALLY don’t like but know is normal), and then spits most of it out as he’s using how to use his tongue to move food around. He’s just got the best smile :).
Throughout the week this week we tackled our tree and got it all decorated. Each year after Kevin gets the lights on, Griffin gets to choose the first ornament to put on the tree. It’s so much fun to open the box of ornaments that are his and remember each one and why he was given it. This year he chose a new ornament that he had picked out on Black Friday shopping with Kevin – a moose! He really does love decorating the tree and says the cutest things. I usually hold him up on my shoulders so he can decorate higher up on the tree and then we get on a ladder at some point too. This year he was so excited to get on the ladder and he went super high up all on his own without any encouragement. Once he got up he said “I’m a brave man” shortly followed by “okay, it’s kinda scary up here I think I want to get down!”. But he stuck it out and hung some ornaments on the tree. We save the ones all the way at the top for Daddy since you have to basically be on the top step of the ladder and then reach high!
I love sneaking in to Reid’s room and checking on him at night. This picture is fuzzy since it was taken in mostly dark, but this night he was clutching his bunny. He honestly doesn’t seem to care if he has it or not, which is fine by us, but I thought this was cute :).
Here are the boys one morning after Kevin and I headed off to work. It brought a smile to my face!
Debbie is really good about doing art projects and painting. It’s also fun that Griffin and Sam are old enough to take pictures of things now too! Here is Reid stamping his reindeer feet for his reindeer project.
Paci’s everywhere, eh? But at least this way he soothes himself when he wakes up and decides he has to have one! He’s definitely a tummy sleeper and moves around in his bed a TON. The pacifiers regularly fall out of his bed (er, he throws them out or drops them when he’s banging them against the slats!) so having multiples is a good thing. He also prefers the 0-6 month pacifiers as the 6+ month ones have a new shape with a little roundness to the end. I’ve found that he will take them when he’s happy, but if he’s tired or fussy he will put one it and take it right out and try another. Kinda fun to watch on the video monitor.
And here we are in our unplanned but color coordinated winter pajamas!
This week I took Griffin to school a couple days which was fun as he was Top Banana! He was super bashful about me wanting to take his picture but I got it nonetheless.
As I’ve probably mentioned time and time again, Brutus is always in the midst of the action. He just begs for attention by inserting himself into every situation and he absolutely loves to lay on Reid’s blankets when they are on the floor.
Reid isn’t really pulling himself up yet, but if you prop him up against something he’ll hang tough for a few seconds. He is more inclined to bounce his little legs and do a dance than stand still.
I really enjoyed picking Griffin up from school and hanging out at home. One afternoon it was a terribly yucky weather day out so we snuggled up on the couch and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It was the perfect thing. I had Finn model his Thanksgiving hat from school before we watched our movie. Shall we say, I’m not the best about emptying his folder each day after school.
We’re enjoying our new couch and in particular sitting in our family room on quiet evenings after Reid and Finn are in bed for the night. There isn’t anything better than a Christmas tree, blanket, and hot beverage!
On Saturday Kevin and Finn (and Brutus and Lily for 2 minutes) went out and raked up our leaves in the front yard and walkway to clean things up for our guests. Finn loved jumping in the pile, Brutus wasn’t quite sure what to do, and Lily sniffed around and then was happy to come back inside. Later that morning we had our annual Candy Making Party at our house with Mom and Dad, the Bethunes, Mannings, Conrads, and Ryans. It’s one of my favorite Christmas traditions and of course all about family and treats. Mom planned and made some super cute crafts with the kids, we decorated sugar cookies, made buckeyes, four flavors of hard tack (sassafras, lemon, peppermint, and cinnamon), and caramel pretzel bites. It was constant motion for several hours but tons of fun!
Reid was a great napper during the party which was a great help! Then when he was up he was a happy guy and a hit with everyone who was here.
The Ryans brought us a beautiful flower arrangement too. Such a thoughtful gift and so pretty! My favorite are the hypericum berries.

We’ve had a busy week filled with all kinds of fun and adventure though most of our fun happened over over the weekend as you’ll see in a minute.
Throughout the week various family members began arriving in Ohio in preparation for Jim and Pat’s 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration on Saturday, August 12th. Uncle Todd spent the night with us and Griffin really loved having him here. He wanted him to do everything – play superheroes, dodge ball, read books, color, any and everything he asked Todd to do it with him and Todd obliged 🙂
On Friday I went Kroger and Costco to pick up white flowers to make arrangements for Jim and Pat’s anniversary party. I got home and put them all in big vases and from there began making arrangements. It was so fun! And I think they turned out pretty well.
Later on Friday night we headed off to drop the kids at Uncle Andy and Aunt Amy’s house with the cousins while Kevin and I went to our friend Laura’s 40th birthday party. The theme was Prom 1995 (the year she graduated high school) so we got all decked out in dressy stuff. I was fortunate to borrow a dress from a friend and I found a matching bow tie and cummerbund for Kevin. I ordered us matching corsage and boutonniere as well. It was a fun celebration and I enjoyed getting the below text updates from Amy and Andy letting us know all was well with the kiddos. We’re grateful they were able to watch them for us!
Saturday morning we woke up early and got the car packed up and headed to Enon to begin the party prep for later that afternoon. When I made all of these flower arrangements I had no idea how many I would end up with or what size or how we would get them there! Turns out we had five (four pretty large ones) to somehow get there in one piece. Kevin did a great job of making support boxes for them so they wouldn’t move during our trip. They all arrived looking great thanks to his packing genius.
Here they are, the celebratory couple standing next to their party sign! Kevin had this banner made locally in Columbus and they did a great job. The picture on the left is from their wedding day and the picture on the right is from our wedding almost 5 years ago. It worked out great and was easy to setup and take down.
We brought cookies, cupcakes, and an anniversary cake for the celebration. I went and visited Sweet Tooth Cottage, a local bakery in Powell where I’ve previously gotten custom cookies. I had heard good things about their cakes so I figured we would get it there along with cupcakes too. Oh my goodness – the cake was delicious! It was chocolate with vanilla buttercream and the frosting was so good. Flavorful but not too sweet. And that cake, oh my goodness, four layers of chocolate loaded with beautiful flowers and gold dust on top. It was SO HEAVY! And we had cute little cupcakes to match and custom hearts with “fifty” written on them and wedding cakes with “fifty” as well. And we enjoyed finding decorations and having pictures made for everyone to see Jim and Pat 50 years ago!
It was great to have so many family members make the trip to Enon to celebrate and also to see the progress Jim and Pat have made on renovating their “new” home! It was also nice for everyone to be able to meet Reid! He was passed around for most of the afternoon and got to meet many aunts, uncles, and cousins from Ohio to Texas to California.
After the party we headed down the street to Kevin’s high school friend, Eric’s, annual pig roast/party. It is literally a few houses down the street. Tons of people were still there and they had a lovely bonfire that Griffin really enjoyed.
Pat’s request for her anniversary was that she wanted all of her kids under one roof! Who knows when that may happen again, but we made it happen this time complete with grandkids too! Here Griffin is fast asleep after a super late night and a loaded party day!
On Sunday morning Griffin enjoyed more play time with Charlotte and Max who were in town from Albuquerque. Charlotte and Finn really loved playing with the cars and the track forming it into various shapes with different ramps and such.
Chris and I joked as we sat around on Sunday morning that this is the new “family” time. Every single person in the room was using their electronic device be it a laptop, tablet, or cell phone. Too funny, but the way it is these days it seems.
On Sunday afternoon Brett and Missy made fried chicken for dinner for everyone. It was tasty!
And here are some others from throughout the week.
