Having fun in the kitchen and knocking another item off our summer bucket list: make a pie! Finn and I made our first blueberry pie of the season this week to take to the Pilgrim’s for the 4th of July festivities at their house. Yummers. I still need to perfect the baking – this time it turned out a bit soupy, but still delish. We enjoyed hanging out with friends (and family, ha!) at the Pilgrim’s and were also able to walk to Coffman High School for the Dublin 4th festivities which include a million bounce houses for the kids to burn some serious energy!Earlier in the morning we started the day by building and then destroying a “downtown big city” building.
Finn went down to the Columbus Commons for Kids on Friday with Debbie. There are a lot of fun activities, including baseball, hockey, and planting seeds (oh, and free ice cream sandwiches!). Here Finn planted a bean and watermelon seed. He also ventured to the zoo where he continues to enjoy the fun of having a Gold Membership so he can feed the giraffes and ride ponies, camels, and rides for “free”.
Kevin and I have been lucky enough to enjoy date nights lately. I had arranged with Debbie to stay late one night a week while her son is away at his dads for several weeks this summer. So we headed to Aab India and enjoyed some yummy Indian food. When they brought out our food they called this one the “tv dinner”, ha! Even Finn got to enjoy some leftovers the next day as we saved the round, donut-looking ball for him. Apparently it was delish!
On Saturday we made a late in the day decision to head to the Clippers game. Kevin had rented a trailer to bring home some trees we purchased for our front yard. Those two picked up our trees and brought them home and it was perfect timing that I got home from Millcreek (we were on the Cultivate’16 Grower Tour this year) in order to have an evening of fun. It was a hot night, but a fun one! We had on our summer bucket list to attend 3 outdoor concerts – I think we’ve already surpassed that! Going back to our dating days Kevin and I have always enjoying hanging out listening to live music and since we’ve had Finn we’ve always taken him along. He likes to dance and be silly. We were joined by the Bethune’s, Eilerman’s, and Manning’s this week so we had a nice fun crowd.
And remember our caterpillars? After what seemed like forever, on Saturday the first one emerged as a butterfly! After watching it for a day Kevin and Finn released it on Sunday. Then a bit later when Kevin and Finn were mowing the yard they found a baby toad!
We’ve had another fun week with cousins and friends and celebrating America’s Independence and enjoying the fun days of summer. On Thursday this week my sister was kind enough to watch Griffin while I was at work. He was spoiled and able to enjoy a fun play day with his cousins including a trip to the bunny splash pad complete with ice cream sandwiches! It was a pretty warm day so when I picked Finn up we had planned to go to Zoombeezi on our way home for a couple hours since it was the beginning of our weekend. I was able to take Friday off so that we could go to Red, White, and Boom in the afternoon and hang out at Bicentennial Park listening to live music and hanging with friends. It’s our tradition, for Kevin and me, to go to Red White and Boom. It’s always sentimental as it’s the day I found out I was pregnant back in 2012, and it is fun to see how Griffin continues to grow and experience different things with each passing year. He hadn’t taken a nap – so he didn’t even eat much of his pretzel (normally he can finish the whole thing!) and was out before we made the 10 minute trip home. On Friday morning, Finn and I skyped with Kevin while he was at work. We enjoyed the dark and stormy morning at home before we headed out to tackle our list of supplies for Red, White, and Boom. I might have gone a little overboard this year – but we were meeting up with several friends and so I packed enough food and drinks to feed an army. We also experimented with dry ice for the first time as it was really warm and we were going to be there for a long time! I decided to experiment and pack frozen treats so we took frozen ice cream snickers bars and cones, firecracker popsicles, ice cream sandwiches (as my sister had told me “Finn says you don’t have these at home and we need to fix that”), and frozen chocolate covered bananas. Anything touching the dry ice stayed frozen the entire time – I was impressed! We had a bit of melt down on the sandwiches on the edge of the cooler – so you know, we just ate them! Kevin had taped off our lawn space at Bicentennial Park this year, our first time doing that. It worked out great so we didn’t need to rush to get a great spot at the park. We had a huge area and great space to see the fireworks. It worked out great that Finn fell asleep on our way down to pick up Kevin from work 🙂This year we took our pop-up tent for some shade space and a little play area for Finn. It was great! We went over to visit the horses prior to the start of the parade and Finn was able to sit on the lap of the Police Officer who led the parade. Holywell, the band we went to see which includes some friends of ours, put on a great show!
On Saturday we decided to camp out in the backyard as the night time temperatures were cool and perfect for being outside. Kevin and I both had tents from before we knew each other, yet we hadn’t ever used them. We thought it would be perfect to use them as our first family camping experience. Amy called it “glamping” which is probably a better description as we ordered pizza since our time was kind of limited. It was delicious and fun. We had a campfire using our neighbors fire pit so we made s’mores, had some pizza, chips, juice boxes, beer and then hit the hay! Lily even stayed with us, which Finn loved. We used Kevin’s tent which is an 8-person tent, so we had plenty of space and Kevin was even able to stand up inside. The next morning we headed inside to get coffee, juice, and a yogurt sundae for Finn and then we headed back out to our tent for a bit before church. Lily spent some time under the table at my feet as she didn’t really care for some fireworks that someone nearby was setting off. Our garden is growing quite nicely and we have harvested several zucchini. We use the red romaine on our lunch-meat sandwiches pretty regularly too. In keeping with the July 4th theme, Finn made some awesome fireworks art this week with Debbie. And we’ve had some crazy storms lately, including a really bad wind and rain at Millcreek, over 5″ of rain, and many shade cloths, ground cloths, etc., ripped to shreds and blown all over the place. Pretty messy, but fortunately not too much loss of plants. And Finn continues to love his building blocks, he loves to build fun structures with Daddy, and Lily likes to stay on her perch and watch.
This week we had several fun family outings. The days seem to pass and we keep busy with various “adventures” as I like to call them. Pictures can make things appear like life is grand and happy and all roses. And while we certainly have fun, there are sad times too. Those times aren’t captured in pictures, but they are there and they are real. Oftentimes people will ask how we are doing. The truth is at times we are fine and at other times we’re sad, really sad. And hurt. And we miss our son, Nathan. Our family has experienced extreme pain and sadness. Yet life continues to go on every day. So we are choosing to make happy memories. I can tell you that after our experience I certainly have a different perspective on the privilege of being a mom. I by no means get everything right, not even close, but even in the midst of a tantrum I’m reminded of what a blessing Griffin is to our family and the miracle God has given us in him. And I want to have fun and enjoy what is around us. Which brings us to this weeks adventures. I’ve been working less lately and I had the week off and Kevin was home most of the time too. We went to the zoo, Red, White & Boom, a 4th of July parade, and a trip to Grandma and Grandpa Beilstein’s for the 4th. It was a busy and full week which I find is good for me, in particular, to keep the sadness in the back of my mind. We listened to our first-ever “keeper talk” for the rhinoceros. Griffin was able to touch a real horn from the rhino at the zoo, which had fallen off long ago. He had a good time on the statues of the various animals at the zoo too. He was being a bit goofy. It was a crazy weather day as it went from nice and sunny, to torrential downpours as you can see below. Luckily we were close by to take refuge in the tunnel that goes from one side of the zoo to the other. Yikes! During a break in the rain we headed indoors to the aquarium where we were able to see the keeper feed the fish and check out other animals we hadn’t seen in quite awhile. Finn kept wanting to walk with the fish and the stingray. He would get up next to the glass and walk along the glass with the various creatures. He loved the big turtle! The lions are always sleeping during our visits! Finn gave them a high five anyway. And of course the petting zoo. Finn has a real love of animals. He always wants to see them (“pees may i doe see dem?”) and pet them. So we played with the goats for a bit and watched the chickens eat.
Since I’m behind in getting the posts online this is old news, but Finn has a few new outdoor toys. He’s still not totally sure about his motorized car. He drives it for short distances, usually, and then gets out to put things in the hood (balls, chalk, etc). He needs the pillow behind his back so he can reach the pedal!
We also spent a lot of time outside working in the yard. Kevin ordered 6 yards of bulk mulch that we figured would be enough to mulch all the gardens in the front of our house – but not so! We used 6 yards just in the bed by the street and half of a tree in the front yard. Wowza. We did it all really quickly as Kevin would dump and I spread it out. I had spent about 3 hours in the morning weeding the garden as it was a travesty. I wish I had before photos of the mulch piles and the garden!!Kevin made amazing progress in our garage 🙂 He hasn’t parked his car inside since our remodel began last year. He spent lots of time and sweat emptying out this place. Now it’s so spacious and nice! Wish I had a before pic of this too 😉Red, White, & Boom is always something we look forward to each year. Three years ago on the day of Red, White, and Boom I found out I was pregnant and told Kevin shortly before we headed out for the festivities. It’s always a time for us to reminisce. this is the third year in a row we have gone down and enjoyed hanging out on the lawn, taking food, and watching the fireworks. We tried a new spot this year which we didn’t end up liking as much as Bicentennial Park, but we had a nice time. We stick around for the first 12 or 13 minutes of the fireworks before we high-tail it to our car to beat the traffic. We had a nice view and luckily the weather cooperated and cleared up from the rain which was around most of the early part of the day. The next morning we woke up and headed to the Hilliard 4th of July Parade where we were able to hang out front of the church office for New City Presbyterian, the church plant our friends James and Laura are starting. It was a warm and sunny day and we had a great spot with friends, food, and coffee! Finn was pretty shy at retrieving the candy that they toss out (and there was a lot!) but warmed up to it after a bit. He moreso wanted to go inside and dance to the music that was playing! After the parade we headed to Mansfield for a cookout with mom and dad prior to their big trip to Alaska. We had a tasty meal and enjoyed hanging out. Finn went on a ride on the mule with Daddy and PaPa and later we all ventured around Mansfield in the van to show Kevin (who actually drove it all) a lot of the parks and fun places in Mansfield (we went by a few run down areas too). Dad is always keeping busy and his latest thoughts and activities involve figuring out a way to have a community Apple-themed festival utilizing a public park. We spent the night and went to church and Bobby E’s for some lunch after too. Just prior to leaving Finn had a bit of an accident, which led to a quick wash down in the utility sink in laundry room! Silly boy.
