My last week at home included some fun family times over a long holiday weekend. On Friday we began our weekend by heading to Pins Mechanical. Kevin had been car shopping and Griffin and I were at the zoo for a quick visit before the weather began to turn. Griffin has been wanting to go to Pins for awhile but they have strange hours that have been difficult for us to arrange a time to go! We finally made it happen and we had a great time. The weather was yucky outside, cool and rainy, so fortunately for us that meant the crowds were much smaller than normal on a Friday evening. When we arrived we had a short wait so Griffin played pinball and we all enjoyed a drink. Finn’s cool Cucumber drink (with cucumber, lime, and soda) was so yummy! Being the cucumber head that he is he liked it and it came in the keepsake duckpin ball cup. I really enjoyed it too and I plan to get one when we go back next time! Reid slept through most of it (we put ear plugs in both boys as it’s a pretty noisy place) but awoke toward the end. He was my lucky charm as he bowled with me and I got a few spares 🙂 Â
On Saturday morning we headed to Mansfield for a holiday cookout at Mom and Dad’s. We decided to make a last minute trip to Apple Hill where we picked Honeycrisp apples and enjoyed tasty and warm apple donuts! From there we headed to Kingwood Center to enjoy Ribbit the Exhibit, a cute traveling exhibit of frogs. We walked around the grounds for a short bit before they closed for a large wedding event.Â
This made me laugh – Brutus didn’t want to be on the outside of the crate on the way to or from Mansfield so he slid himself through a tight space in order to get in and lay down with Lily.Â
While Reid appears to have an old man hair do in most pics (bald on the top and sides) he actually has a lot of hair! It’s coming in a lighter color and is hard to see but it’s soft and fuzzy!
And here are a few more of our week, including Griffin’s “meet the teacher” day at pre-school. He did a treasure hunt around his classroom finding various items his teacher put on the hunt. It was a fun way for him to get familiarized with parts of his classroom. And he chose a yellow hand print for himself for this year’s class canvas.Â

Check out our handsome Tiger! Here is Griffin’s pre-school picture from this year and below is his Tiger class photo along with teachers Miss Jen and Miss Irma. He is really enjoying school and comes home telling stories about what he did and talking about his friends. It’s pretty cute! He eats lunch there too and typically eats really well. When I pick him up and he is telling me about his day we check out his lunch and he is so proud when he eats really well 🙂
On Tuesday, Election Day, we headed to the polls and took Griffin along. Our polling location is always active and busy yet we don’t have to wait so we were in and out pretty quickly. Afterward we headed to our traditional Annie’s Southern Kitchen for a tasty breakfast before Kevin and I headed to work.Â
Here are a few others from this week before we left on our annual trip to Tennessee. Finn loves player with Cooper and Cole whenever they are home and outside. They enjoyed a fun afternoon playing in the leaves. He also made some fun artwork with Debbie this week including a Turkey, a pilgrim hat, and a feather hat. Â
I made it to Fox in the Snow for a special treat one afternoon after a doctor appointment at Riverside. Â We met with a genetic counselor, the specialist, and the sonographer who performed a detailed ultrasound called the Ultra Screen where they look at the thickness and fluid in the cavity of the spinal cord area at the base of the baby’s neck (called nuchal translucency). This measurement, along with a blood sample of mine that we had sent off in the mail, is used to assess the risk of Trisomy 18, 13, or 21. An increased thickness can indicate possible chromosomal issues and because of our history with Nathan and his Trisomy 18 diagnosis, we opted for the least risky procedure that would provide insight on the health of the baby. We were elated to learn that the scan showed a very normal spinal area/thickness. The baby was actually in a perfect “textbook” position when she first looked so she got some great images. They also look at the nose for the presence of a nose-bone which is another positive, as the lack of one can also indicate chromosomal issues. Everything looked wonderful. I left feeling so relieved. It doesn’t mean everything is guaranteed to be perfect by any means, but it was reassuring to hear from the specialist that the baby looked great.
We left early on Friday morning for our trip to the Smoky Mountains. We arrived at our cabin, Smoky Bear, and were a bit scared at the sight of the driveway and its pitch. Yikes! It was kind of like going up and down a roller coaster where you can’t quite see where you are headed! But after a few trips we were good to go 🙂
Finn loved playing with the oven mitts and a package of ping pong balls that we purchased to play some “baseball” in the cabin. It was amazing that he was able to catch so many!
Smoky Bear had a pool! We enjoyed playing in the pool although it was not very warm! So our stints were rather short but we had plenty of good times!
One of our first adventures in Tennessee was a new adventure for us. We drove through part of the Smoky Mountains National Park and saw some landmarks there like the Chimney Tops area on our way to Clingman’s Dome. A new adventure for us this year as we walked the paved, very steep, half-mile trail to the summit at 6,643 feet, which is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Here is our family selfie at the top of Clingman’s Dome. Â It was a hazy day, with all of the forest fires in the area, so the views weren’t as great as we were hoping. But it was a fun adventure to the top!
September 11, 2016 ~ Preschool week!
Take a look at our Tiger! Finn started school on Thursday this week and he had a great day! His teachers, Miss Jen and Miss Irma, are really sweet. They are really big on the kids being independent so when Finn arrives at school he puts his lunch in a basket outside the classroom, finds his cubbie and puts his book bag there, and then heads into class. When i picked him up he was so excited to tell me about his day! He always likes to show me how much of his lunch he ate.Â
Finn shared several stories of his day while we were on our way to pick up our pottery projects. Finn’s spider man bank turned out so great! And he was REALLY excited to look at him again when we got home.
Griffin insisted that he was still hungry on his way home so we stopped for a tasty lunch a Culver’s (his favorite spot). I couldn’t believe it – he ate his entire lunch, including his custard with M & M’s. Our week was full of other fun times too. On Friday, Millcreek hosted our annual Open House. Kevin and Finn arrived just as the festivities were ending. Kevin only stayed a short while so he could go pickup George, the RV, from his parents. He put together a thoughtful tailgate for our friend Chris Manning’s 40th birthday. He went down to campus at 5:30 am to get a great tailgating spot. Finn and I joined him in the morning prior to the other fellas showing up.  I called it the breakfast shift! Anyhow, it was Finn’s first time for tailgating on campus – he loved playing football with daddy, eating timbits, and watching all of the activity.Â
Look at Finn’s awesome throw and follow-through. This boy has some skills 🙂
And here are a few other shots from our week. Â Finn always loves to help me water the trees and the garden, some basement fun learning about dinosaurs this week, and Uncle Sean’s arrival in town for the week.Â
And here’s one from last Sunday that I forgot to include – a surprise baby shower cookout for our friends, Claire and Eric, who are expecting a little boy in a month! Finn had lots of fun meeting some new kiddos.
