December 3, 2017 ~ 28 weeks

What another busy and fun week we’ve had! As you can see, Reid is enjoying the holiday season and his first round of so many fun family traditions. He also had avacado for the first time this week as you can see what remains on his face for this picture. He’s pretty curious about it and is good at picking it up and getting it in his mouth. From there he makes the funniest faces, gags (which I REALLY don’t like but know is normal), and then spits most of it out as he’s using how to use his tongue to move food around. He’s just got the best smile :).

Throughout the week this week we tackled our tree and got it all decorated. Each year after Kevin gets the lights on, Griffin gets to choose the first ornament to put on the tree. It’s so much fun to open the box of ornaments that are his and remember each one and why he was given it. This year he chose a new ornament that he had picked out on Black Friday shopping with Kevin – a moose! He really does love decorating the tree and says the cutest things. I usually hold him up on my shoulders so he can decorate higher up on the tree and then we get on a ladder at some point too. This year he was so excited to get on the ladder and he went super high up all on his own without any encouragement. Once he got up he said “I’m a brave man” shortly followed by “okay, it’s kinda scary up here I think I want to get down!”. But he stuck it out and hung some ornaments on the tree. We save the ones all the way at the top for Daddy since you have to basically be on the top step of the ladder and then reach high!  I love sneaking in to Reid’s room and checking on him at night. This picture is fuzzy since it was taken in mostly dark, but this night he was clutching his bunny. He honestly doesn’t seem to care if he has it or not, which is fine by us, but I thought this was cute :).  Here are the boys one morning after Kevin and I headed off to work. It brought a smile to my face! Debbie is really good about doing art projects and painting. It’s also fun that Griffin and Sam are old enough to take pictures of things now too! Here is Reid stamping his reindeer feet for his reindeer project.  Paci’s everywhere, eh? But at least this way he soothes himself when he wakes up and decides he has to have one! He’s definitely a tummy sleeper and moves around in his bed a TON. The pacifiers regularly fall out of his bed (er, he throws them out or drops them when he’s banging them against the slats!) so having multiples is a good thing. He also prefers the 0-6 month pacifiers as the 6+ month ones have a new shape with a little roundness to the end. I’ve found that he will take them when he’s happy, but if he’s tired or fussy he will put one it and take it right out and try another. Kinda fun to watch on the video monitor.  And here we are in our unplanned but color coordinated winter pajamas! This week I took Griffin to school a couple days which was fun as he was Top Banana! He was super bashful about me wanting to take his picture but I got it nonetheless. As I’ve probably mentioned time and time again, Brutus is always in the midst of the action. He just begs for attention by inserting himself into every situation and he absolutely loves to lay on Reid’s blankets when they are on the floor.  Reid isn’t really pulling himself up yet, but if you prop him up against something he’ll hang tough for a few seconds.  He is more inclined to bounce his little legs and do a dance than stand still. I really enjoyed picking Griffin up from school and hanging out at home. One afternoon it was a terribly yucky weather day out so we snuggled up on the couch and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It was the perfect thing. I had Finn model his Thanksgiving hat from school before we watched our movie. Shall we say, I’m not the best about emptying his folder each day after school. We’re enjoying our new couch and in particular sitting in our family room on quiet evenings after Reid and Finn are in bed for the night. There isn’t anything better than a Christmas tree, blanket, and hot beverage! On Saturday Kevin and Finn (and Brutus and Lily for 2 minutes) went out and raked up our leaves in the front yard and walkway to clean things up for our guests. Finn loved jumping in the pile, Brutus wasn’t quite sure what to do, and Lily sniffed around and then was happy to come back inside. Later that morning we had our annual Candy Making Party at our house with Mom and Dad, the Bethunes, Mannings, Conrads, and Ryans. It’s one of my favorite Christmas traditions and of course all about family and treats. Mom planned and made some super cute crafts with the kids, we decorated sugar cookies, made buckeyes, four flavors of hard tack (sassafras, lemon, peppermint, and cinnamon), and caramel pretzel bites. It was constant motion for several hours but tons of fun! Reid was a great napper during the party which was a great help! Then when he was up he was a happy guy and a hit with everyone who was here.  The Ryans brought us a beautiful flower arrangement too. Such a thoughtful gift and so pretty! My favorite are the hypericum berries.

Tree decorating time! Griffin was really excited to decorate our tree this year.  He kept taking all of his ornaments and stepping up onto the brick fireplace step where he placed most of his ornaments on the tree. It was fun to watch the excitement on his face. Kevin got the top of the tree from the ladder – and he was all the way to the top! Griffin had several fun adventures and activities this week including crafting and baking Gingerbread men and then trying to find the one that escaped! I had to do some homework outside of work hours one evening so Debbie stayed late and they ventured to the Fantasy of Lights in Galena where you drive through a display of lights and then get to sit and talk with Santa at the end. They had quite a fun night! Our family adventure took us to Hocking Hills and Ohio University to watch Cameron Howard participate in the OU Honors Band. It was fun to hang with friends and be back on the campus of my Alma Mater. We enjoyed dinner at Jackie O’s Brewery in the heart of uptown Athens and then headed back to their cabin in Hocking Hills where Finn enjoyed helping to decorate their Christmas tree.  On Sunday we attended the Love Changes Everything Christmas Program at church. This year part of the program included a performance by Holywell, a band that includes several church members. Turns out the kiddos enjoyed dancing around in the “mosh pit” up front.  It was cute to watch.

December has arrived and we are in full holiday mode, as you can see. We’ve been busy with all kinds of activities from decorating our tree, to Finn’s first movie in a theater, baking, and having our yearly tradition “candy making party” at our house with family and friends. The days are ever-so-busy and seem to pass faster than I would like!

First things first, this year we have an Advent Calendar! We got a fun one with animals, wisemen, Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus so that Finn can help put them on each day. We found a printable “advent calendar” that had a verse for each day telling the story of Jesus’ birth.  The Angel was the first one on the calendar this year and Finn put it in the perfect spot.  IMG_2953IMG_2954IMG_2956
We took Finn to his first movie in a theater this week, to see A Christmas Story. He really seemed to enjoy it and didn’t make a peep the entire time. We went to a theater that serves food (and a ginormous bucket of popcorn!) during the show so we enjoyed some dinner during the movie. We are blessed with this little guy. IMG_2961We decorated our tree one evening in preparation for our candy party. Finn loved helping us and looking at all of the ornaments. We all love having such a tall tree! Sadly, we had one tragedy as the ornament that Kevin gave me in December 2011 when we first began dating fell to the floor as Finn and I were putting it up. It was a glass snow globe and unfortunately it shattered :(. Kevin snapped a photo though for memories sake. IMG_2975 DSC_0299 DSC_0305 DSC_0311 DSC_0323 DSC_0302 DSC_0309 IMG_2977 DSC_0316 IMG_2983 DSC_0321 DSC_0331 DSC_0336IMG_2987 DSC_0339 IMG_2985 DSC_0346 DSC_0349DSC_0439 DSC_0328Kind of at the last minute on Friday I asked Finn if he wanted to make some cookies. We made chocolate chip first, and then I figured it would be fun to make the cookie press cookies so he could help with the dough gun and then decorate them. It was fun (and messy)!DSC_0350 DSC_0355 DSC_0359 DSC_0363 DSC_0366 DSC_0374 DSC_0377 IMG_2996We awoke on Saturday morning and got right to party prep – making the peanut butter mixture that we would use later in the afternoon to make buckeyes! Finn is excellent at dumping. We have a pretty good system in place where I measure and he dumps. He’s also really good at turning on the mixer (!). IMG_2999Our friends and family began arriving around noon for our yearly tradition of making Hard Tack Candy and Buckeyes. Our flavors this year were cherry, black licorice, peppermint, sassafras, lemon, and cinnamon. And new this year, we made chocolate truffles too (chocolate/orange and chocolate/vanilla). We enjoyed the company of Mom and Dad, Amy, Andy, and the kids, the Mannings, Conrads, and part of the Kessler, Ryan, and Lewis families. We had a good sized crowd of 12 adults and 14 kiddos. Once again, Mom and Amy did a few crafts with the kids in the basement too, making Christmas ornaments – but somehow I didn’t get a photo of any! Lots of deliciousness by the end of the afternoon!IMG_3001 IMG_3002 IMG_3005 IMG_3006 IMG_3007 IMG_3009 DSC_0384 DSC_0385 DSC_0387 DSC_0389 DSC_0391 IMG_3020 IMG_3023IMG_3024 IMG_3025 IMG_3031 IMG_3035 IMG_3036 IMG_3026 IMG_3027 IMG_3028 IMG_3029 IMG_3037 IMG_3038 IMG_3040 IMG_3047 IMG_3051 IMG_3003 IMG_3004 DSC_0381 IMG_3012 IMG_3016 IMG_3017 IMG_3008IMG_3010IMG_3056IMG_3055 IMG_3059 IMG_3011 IMG_3030 IMG_3033 DSC_0399 IMG_3068 IMG_3067 IMG_3069 IMG_3070 IMG_3077 IMG_3060 IMG_3071 DSC_0410 IMG_3073 IMG_3063 IMG_3064 IMG_3066 DSC_0413 DSC_0415 DSC_0420 DSC_0423 DSC_0417 DSC_0436 DSC_0425 DSC_0430 DSC_0433Whew.  That was lots of work!!

So on Sunday morning we took it easy when we woke up, starting with yummy snowman pancakes that Daddy made for Finn!IMG_3090 IMG_3089
