July 2021 & Summer Vacation

I think the saying typically goes “Christmas in July” but this year, it is “July around Christmas” for this post. To say I’m behind is an understatement. So these posts will be picture heavy and story light. I’m just ready to unload the burden of getting them done.

In early July Sean, Charlotte, and Max visited Ohio and that included a couple of trips to our house in Powell. We had fun hanging out and enjoyed a bike ride to downtown Powell for dinner at Koble together outside on the patio.  The kids love playing together and the pictures from previous visits also prove they are all growing up.

We were fortunate to attend the inaugural Crew match at the new Lower.com field in July as well. It was an electric atmosphere with so much energy and excitement. We literally sat at the top of our section and the view was still stellar.

July is also full of many visits to the pool. We are fortunate to have a fun neighborhood.

We went to Mom and Dad’s new house for the 4th of July and the kids enjoyed setting off some crackers.

Reid has always been a snuggler. He is an early morning guy.

This will be the last year for our “patio garden”. It had a very slow start this year and took forever to produce anything. But we enjoyed tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers from it.

This year we made a trip to a blueberry farm and harvested some fresh blues. To be honest, it was a slow picking! But the fruits were tasty and we were able to take some on vacation.

While Reid does not “nap” officially, he really does need a rest during the day. I often find him sleeping in random places.

This year Mom and Dad treated us to a wonderful family vacation in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. It’s only about a 4 hour drive from our house – which was wonderful! We had a great week filled with a pontoon boat and tube rental, fun adventures, good food, and family time.

We primarily are still sticking to outdoor activities, including a visit here and there to Nocterra. We met up with Brian, Lisa, Cooper and Cole for a fun night and the kids enjoyed playing card games.

We got our entire house carpets cleaned and it is amazing the difference in the way it makes the house feel (and smell!). If only we were able to keep the rooms this clutter-free and organized all the time….one can only dream.

Look at little Reidy from a couple of years ago! He continues to be a trooper and goes with me to Griffin’s soccer practices and other necessities. He loves adventure.

It’s been so long ago it’s hard to even recall, but I believe we went on a walk and in the end had a competition where we all placed and were given medals (a nod to the olympics that were going on at the time). Even Brutie got in on the medal placing.

Catching lightning bugs with the Manning girls, a bike ride for breakfast to The Locust Table in downtown Powell, a fun trip to the park, and a visit to Griffin’s new playground at Tyler Run.

And a little nod at the listing of Mom and Dad’s Mansfield home listing. The number of views and saves online were crazy!

Millcreek had a fun social event put on by the social committee – the Summer Olympics. It included a timed competition for filling flats with pots, pie eating, plug tray sticking, and an egg toss.

March 17-31, 2019

St. Patrick’s Day started with green pancakes to go with the green necklaces and fun plates. Later we had green avacado toast too :).

It seems this spring is yet another weird weather one. On March 18th we awoke to a pretty winter scene of snow. I snapped some pictures before heading to work as it was a beautiful sight – just not one for March!

Griffin had his 6-year checkup on the 18th. Time sure if flying by, I’m not sure how it’s already been six years. But this boy is growing like a weed, gaining 6 pounds and 2.75 inches in a year. He’s up to 47.3 pounds (60 %ile) and 45 3/4″ (57%ile) {Head circumference 15.8 cm / 65%ile}. He didn’t have to get any shots (no more until 11!) but I talked to Dr. Houts about how now and again Griffin is really washed out and has no color in his face. I was telling him how I’ve been anemic and so he suggested they could run a quick finger-poke blood test, which they did. It came back really good, he is right in the middle of the range they want to see – so no worries about that! I took him out for our traditional ice cream treat at Graeter’s afterward.

We received Griffin’s Kindergarten class photo this week. They put each of the kids names on the picture, which at first I thought strange but then found kind of neat. At least that way we can remember everyone’s names years from now!

I took Finn with me to Millcreek to pick out some new houseplants. I’ve finally decided to replace the ones that have been dead for months, ha! We took a quick tour around the place and I let him “drive” the jeep, so he was a happy camper. Second pic, selfie by Finn.  Later that day we planted seeds for our vegetable garden. We skipped doing it last year, figure we’ll give it a go this year, but perhaps in pots. Time will tell.

It was a beautiful afternoon so we decided to head to the zoo to enjoy the nice weather. Griffin got to ride a pony (we tried Reid, but he was scared!) and we all rode the train.

On Sunday we headed to New City Presbyterian church as afterward we went to Homestead Park to celebrate James Kessler’s 40th birthday at the pavilion. The kids enjoyed playing on the playground equipment and we scarfed down pizza before we had to head home for nap time. It was quite the crowd as most of the church came too!

For my birthday Kevin and the boys gave me a bike. This week Kevin installed Reid’s seat so now we can head out with everyone! We took it on a quick test drive before leaving on a surprise spring break trip with the kids to Great Wolf Lodge. We weren’t planning to do anything, but as the week went on I just thought it would be fun to do something for break. We spent Friday afternoon and night, Saturday, and until mid-afternoon Sunday enjoying Great Wolf Lodge in Mason. There are numerous restaurants, an arcade, ice cream shop, etc., all within the hotel so once we were there we didn’t need to leave! We had a good time.

Haya has planned some fun activities with the kids lately. They drew out the solar system and then also assembled it on sticks with styrofoam balls. Next, they are going to paint all of the planets. Griffin, who once loved arts and crafts, hasn’t really been into it much with Haya. When I asked him about it he told me he always got to do things with Sam and it’s not as fun to do them himself.  Ugh. Well, we’ll keep trying!  The picture of Finn in his pj’s was the Tuesday after his birthday. He chose for everyone to wear PJ’s to school to celebrate his birthday (since they don’t allow you to bring in desserts/treats). That was super fun for him, this boy would live in jammies or comfy clothes if he could.

And here are a few Millcreek updates.  Pump House number 2, going in out in the I-pad is coming right along. We also sent our first-ever shipment to Nevada via common carrier, so I included pics of that just for fun. The plants arrived a week later all in fine condition. There’s a first time for everything. And this year we’ve changed our shipping TV’s from vertical to horizontal in order to accommodate all of the many sizes we’re growing. Things are always changing.

A few videos from the week are below.

February 14-28, 2019

We had our first ever kid-free vacation! Kevin was in San Francisco for the week for work, speaking at the IBM Think! Conference. He flew out super early Monday morning and I flew out on Thursday (Valentine’s Day) to join him for a long weekend sans the kids. Jim and Pat were gracious to watch the boys for us for those five (!) days. We are really grateful and the boys had a fun time with Grandma and Grandpa!

This was the first time I’d flown alone is a super long time. I had a short flight to St. Louis, a short layover there before heading on to San Francisco. Southwest served free drinks for Valentine’s Day so I enjoyed a mimosa while I chatted with my seatmate, a lovely lady who was traveling to San Francisco with her husband for a conference (not the one Kevin was at though, lol). She lived in Nashville and this was the first time they’d left their kids in about 5 years so we had some things in common to chat about. It was an easy flight, thank goodness! Once I landed I took an Uber to the swanky Stanford Court Hotel in the Nob Hill area of downtown San Francisco where Kevin greeted me in the lobby. We exchanged valentine’s gifts (the heart bracelet, below and super good cookies 🙂 I think I received the nicer gift) and then we headed out to meet up with two of Kevin’s coworkers and friends. We spent the next Friday and part of Saturday doing all the tourist things exploring San Francisco. We had a delicious breakfast at Taylor Street Tavern and then walked all the way out to the Ferry Building, stopping to browse here and there along the way. We rode the metro electric street cars up to Pier 39 and enjoyed drinks and appetizers while taking in the view of Alcatraz and the bay. We walked by the seals (oh my, I forgot how t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e they smell!) on our way to Ghiradelli Square. We stopped at the San Francisco Brewing Company and then onward via cable car back to our hotel.

Before we headed out of town towards Healdsburg, we drove down Lombard Street. It’s not nearly as pretty in February as it is in the summer when all the plants are flowering! It was a cloudy and from time to time rainy drive up to Healdsburg, a fun little town in Sonoma County. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge on our way. Once we arrived, we parked and just wondered around the downtown area where there are restaurants, bars, tasting rooms, and shops. We had a fun afternoon going from one place to the next.

Sunday morning we ventured to a few wineries for tastings. Our first stop: Mill Creek Winery, a cute little family run winery with a small tasting room. Yvonne was great at explaining all of the wines as she poured each sample. We really enjoyed our visit there and left with a few bottles and a wine club membership, ha!

Our next stop was Geyser Peak Winery. We had another great experience there with a bubbly lady who really loved talking about each wine and the various “notes” they have.

Our quick trip came to an end and when we arrived at the airport and got to our gate, Kevin was A1 for boarding on both legs of our flights home. What are the chances, lol? So I captured his picture which he didn’t love, but Finn enjoyed the photo as we were at gate 28, his bus number.

Grandma and Grandpa sent us this picture of the boys at bath time having so much fun! Our flight back was delayed a few hours departing St. Louis so we arrived home at 1 am, rather than 9 pm. We were super happy when we got back and I couldn’t wait to check on the kids.

The rest of the month just seemed to fly by. I’ve been trying to take pictures that capture the boys personalities, rather than always taking posed pictures. And I’ve posted some videos too that aren’t really anything fancy to watch, just everyday things I want to remember! I wish I could figure out why and how Reid ever learned to have such crazy table manners. I often sit him in his high chair while I make dinner. The result is that he stays put while I’m making dinner, but as soon as we sit down to eat he’s ready to get up! And he just says “done” and “down” over and over, pushes his plate away (or dumps it) and often launches his silverware across the counter or room. No joke. It is entirely frustrating and doesn’t seem to be getting any better. But, I guess that’s what life is like at less than two years old?

Sir Reid is also quite the climber. He’s climbed out of his crib a few times with me in the room (my back was turned so I didn’t even know he was doing it until I heard chuckling) and once with a sitter! We’ve gotten the door covers that go over the knobs (as he can also open the round door knobs and escape from any room) but he’s already figured out how to get them off the door. This boy is gonna be trouble.

The boys have been enjoying outside play time with Cole, Cooper, and Abbie lately. One day I arrived home to a front yard game of football with Griffin, Georgia, Ella, and Abbie.

After church on Sunday, Griffin and I went on a lunch date (we’d gone to church solo) to First Watch. He tore in to his plate of chocolate chip pancakes and we had a nice time together. Daddy and Reid were home napping and catching up on sleep. Reid continues to explore in the pantry and currently loves to stack coffee k-cups. Griffin completed his blue sight word book and received his certificate that included free custard at Culvers. Great job, Finn!

Millcreek is getting busier with production as we prepare for the spring shipping season. On one of my ventures out of the office this week I snapped some pictures of plug trays that are about ready to be transplanted. It’s like walking through a green tropical rain forest in the conservatory this time of year.

While we were in San Francisco both Lily and Brutus vomited a time or two. Lily seemed to also really be struggling with her walking, so I made an appointment and Kevin took her in to get looked at. Dr. Mansfield says it is just arthritis, even though it seems her back left leg is the most hobbly. She ran a full CBC of bloodwork, the results of which showed increased levels of the pancreas enzyme as well as a liver enzyme. That along with her decreased appetite, Dr. Mansfield recommended an ultrasound of her abdomen to look at the liver and pancreas. On Thursday the traveling vet from OSU performed the ultrasound and Dr. Mansfield called me with the results. They saw some “very concerning” changes in the thickness and lining of Lily’s stomach. She mentioned the “very concerning” at least three times. It is likely one of two things: severe gastritis (ulceration and irritation of the stomach) or stomach cancer. The only way to know for sure is to do a biopsy, either by endoscopy or surgical procedure. Given Lily’s current health status with her struggling to get around well, lack of appetite, she’s lost 7 or 8 pounds, and he vomiting I wasn’t sure a big medical procedure was the best thing for now. So we’re treating it as severe gastritis and she’s on a myriad of medications (12 pills a day) for the next couple of weeks to see if her appetite improves and she maintains her weight. The also ran a full set of x-rays, which revealed that her arthritis is “significantly” worse than it was just 2 years ago. My sweet Lily girl, I was heartbroken when Dr. Mansfield listed the possibilities of what’s wrong with her. She’s had a tough adult life – tooth extractions, torn ccl surgery, terrible arthritis. It seems Reid was able to tell she’s not feeling well as he’s been all about Lily (yih yee) lately. He sits right up next to her, hugs her, lays next to her and she just takes it all in.  o
