August 1-31, 2020

Going through all of the photos and looking back at August – we had a really fun month! Soaking in the sun with lots of time at the pool with friends and our final swim lesson. One of the days was only in the high 60’s so the kids enjoyed the hot tub for the first time. That was quite a treat.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that I used to grow plants. Seems like a former life! I have enjoyed having a garden again this yet but find that I am terrible at regularly watering our patio planters and garden beds. Argh! But we have enjoyed a good harvest of cucumbers, red, yellow, and green peppers, and a few yellow squash and zucchini. I didn’t realize how susceptible zucchini are to blossom end rot – well we had our fair share of that this year! We’ve been adding the veggies to our Hello Fresh dinners.

After nearly 6 years of not having the pantry doors trimmed out since our kitchen remodel, Kevin and I teamed up to get it done! He was measured and cut all the trim and I painted it; then he put it in. Yay! One thing off the list.

We’ve also been finishing up the porch since returning from vacation. The carpenters trimmed out all of the windows, both the skylights and the wall windows, they finished the ceiling beam, and painted it all white. We decided to put in a wood laminate floor to make it feel a bit more finished. We chose a light grey, which, along with the white walls makes it feel very clean and bright. We did some touch ups, caulking, and then put together the new sectional couch and table and now it’s ready to be enjoyed.

Griffin’s upper tooth has been sooooo wiggly yet he doesn’t want to have it pulled! One night I was worried he might choke on it in his sleep and Kevin was looking at it – and surprisingly pulled it. Griffin was pretty upset as he wasn’t expecting it  hence the teary eyes :(. But in the end, he was looking forward to the tooth fairy visiting later that evening.

Here are a few other random photos of our month – super cute cowboys playing around the house, Reidy wearing his oversized Camp B shirt, our family adventures to Rita’s and Culvers on our bikes.

Griffin was invited to his 1st grade friend, Kara’s, birthday party. It was to be a socially distanced drive by – but when we arrived people were in the driveway. We had our masks on so we went up for a quick hello. It was really sweet to see how much these friends enjoyed being able to see each other in person. They played a quick game of hide and seek, colored in the driveway, and enjoyed popsicles. It was a really hot afternoon.

We had left a driveway gathering in our neighborhood (our driveway actually, lol) to head to the birthday drive-by and were gone longer than we anticipated. So on our return home we picked up pizza for all the kids to have outside while watching the CBJ game that Brian setup in their driveway. These kids have so much fun together. Before long they were all playing hockey and each had gone home to get their jerseys to wear. We’re really thankful to have such a great pod of neighborhood friends. Both kids and adults enjoy hanging out together and it’s provided some sense of normalcy during the times of Corona.

Our neighbor, Karla, had organized a private rental of Sky Zone for our neighborhood crew. We were able to have the entire place to ourselves for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. The kids had an absolute blast and left there a sweaty mess! Everyone wore their masks (other than Reid who takes his off after a short bit, and baby Abbie).

Later that day was our socially distanced neighborhood Block Party. Chrissie arranged for the Pitabilities food truck and Lyndsey arranged for Kona ice. It was mostly our regular crew of neighbors who attended and a few others as well. The adults wore masks and spaced out in Chrissie and Scotts driveway and yard as well as Don & Beth Maxwells yard. Beth makes the most wonderful and perfect looking desserts that she made for the gathering. She and Don are in their late 80’s and are just the most fun couple. They participate in everything before and during Corona (socially distanced and masked) and comment on all the facebook posts our neighborhood crews make. Since our kids play together regularly we allowed them to play and sit together without wearing their masks. We were able to meet new neighbors who just moved in within the last week, Katy & Eric Deister, who are expecting a little boy in early November.

On August 28th we took the boys to our first inside-dining experience since early March. We went to Bd’s Mongolian Grill where Reid ate not 1, but 2 orders of Mac and Cheese. Griffin had chicken tenders and the other kids created their own made-to-order dishes. The boys did great sitting together at the table and not touching things. Kevin and I were both a bit nervous as it was our first time sitting inside, but it turned out fine and it was nice to do something “normal”.

We’ve gone to Nocterra a few times where we’re able to sit outside at picnic tables and enjoy some relaxing. They’ve partnered with a local Powell company called Sharecuterie, makers of grazing boards and boxes, that you can have delivered to Nocterra on Monday’s for free. We decided to try it out and it was delish! Tons of fun sweet and savory things in our grazing box that we shared with Lisa and Brian in celebration of their 2 year wedding reception-iversary, lol.

I finally scheduled the boys dental checkups after much delay. I was nervous that they would both have cavities and wasn’t sure how Reid would do as he is very shy and apprehensive in new or uncertain situations. Both boys did really well when it was their turn in the chair. Griffin, unfortunately, had 2 cavities – each between teeth – which makes me feel like a terrible mom as I am not a good regular flosser for these boys, nor do I remind them to do it! So – we will be working on that! Reid had a perfect checkup, no cavities.

After the dentist we had a little fun visiting the new pedestrian bridge in Bridge Park. It gave this mama quite a test of my nerves! I held both of their hands tight – even though there are wires and rails, I get pretty freaked out these days about heights and especially with Reid in situations like these. But we walked across from one side to the other where the boys did a little running around. Then we headed back over the bridge and went home. Whew!

I’m not sure why I didn’t really put much thought into a workspace for Griffin to do Distance Learning, but about 2 weeks before school started I began to think we needed to have a dedicated workspace for Griffin. That began a total basement cleaning/purging/painting party and the quest for desks (which by the way are in short supply everywhere since everyone in the world is looking for desks for kids to learn from home!). As it turns out, Lexi broke her foot at a horse show and needed to have the week off work. The timing actually was perfect as I was forced to stay home with the kids, which enabled me to get the basement complete. The kids built a lot of forts and kept themselves busy for a few days. I NEVER would have gotten it done on time otherwise; it was a much larger and time consuming project that I had anticipated. In the end, we have new white walls, found desk parts at IKEA, and turned the kids side of the basement into a classroom. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.

We were able to stop at Tyler Run and pick up the school supply kit that I had ordered for Griffin. He was excited to be able to go to school and see it! And when we got home the boys each organized their school supplies. So much joy in school supplies!

While we see a lot of our neighbors, we haven’t seen many of our friends in what seems like forever. Thankfully, we were able to connect with the Manning’s one evening at Nocterra. We had so much fun just sitting around and talking!

After five years, we have finally arranged to have Memorials placed at our cemetery plots in the Dublin Cemetery. We’ve ordered our Armstrong family stone as well as Nathan’s marker. We started this process in July and it is pretty much a slow-going-thing. Coordination between the cemetery and the stone company is not so efficient! And then the weather has to be just so, so that the cement footers can be dug out and then poured. We stop by occasionally to check the progress. So far, the footer has been poured for Nathan’s marker, but only the foundation has been dug for the family stone.

Random photo of me outside enjoying coffee in one of my favorite mugs – a painting of Griffin’s from 1st grade 🙂

We had fun at the Bethune’s to celebrate Rowan’s 9th birthday. Nine, what? Not sure how everyone is growing up so darn fast, but it seems to be happening despite my best efforts to slow time down. Rowan had an all-things-Pokemon party complete with an awesome Pokemon cake made by Amy as well as homemade Pokemon cookies. Reid was in sugar heaven. Rowie received a hover board and was already demonstrating excellent skills. He allowed Griffin to try it out and he, of course, thought it was pretty sweet.

Lexi invited us to one of her horse shows, which was local in Marysville. We headed up about mid-morning and thought we’d be there until mid-afternoon. As it turns out we were there until 10 pm! But it was such a fun time we couldn’t leave! We were able to see Lexi compete with Tango in several events and the boys were enamored with petting, feeding, and riding Tango. Pretty sure Griffin wants a horse now, lol. It took Reid a bit to warm up, but then he was all-things-Tango. Lexi’s Mom and Dad were there and we enjoyed spending several hours talking with them throughout the day. Others from Lexi’s barn were there too, including some she gives riding lessons to, so it was neat to see her in her element. She really helps kids boost their confidence.

We’ll end with a crazy goofy pic of silliness in the basement and the kids riding Tango all by themselves with Lexi’s lead. They had so much fun!

Camp B – Summer Family Vacation 2020

Get ready for picture overload from our vacation week at Camp B! Our original plans to go to Bethany Beach area of Delaware were changed due to the corona. But we had a wonderful week in Mansfield at Camp B. Mom and Dad spent a lot of time and preparation to make each day a fun one.

We started with the Camp Welcome that included Grandpa reviewing the rules of camp and raising of the Camp B flag. Kevin designed a camp logo and got the flag along with stickers that we put on water bottles, journals, and lanterns. Mom and Dad got everyone Camp B shirts and the Bethune’s got the kiddos really cool head lamps. At the welcome, the kiddos each opened their bags which also included a book for each of them along with a letter and spending money from Grandma and Grandpa. Pretty grand start!

Kevin put a lot of work into pre-building the car wash at home and then later Friday evening he assembled it at Camp B along with help from Rowan and Grandpa.

Reid could regularly be round all week long wearing his back pack, that he had filled with his journal and book all while walking around with his headlamp and holding his lantern. Silly kid. The kids played a lot of what we refer to as “hot lava” where they use the stepping blocks to stay off the floor, or lava. It was an awesome birthday gift from the Bethune’s to Reid. Pretty fun entertainment and definitely works their core.

On Saturday we had a water day filled with fun at the car wash, a bubble machine maker, and the pool. The kids spent hours in their suits doing all the things. A pretty grand time.

Lots of the above activities and the heat then leads to situations like these, lol. Reid has pretty much stopped napping, except for on vacation. That’s what vacation is all about though, right? All the kids enjoy sitting in the family room recliner from time to time. Sometimes there are even 3 or 4 of them in it! Reid and Greta spent a fair bit of time together.

Another fun outdoor activity was squirt-gun dying t-shirts! The kids each picked the colors they wanted and shot and their shirts to decorate them in any fashion they wanted. It was pretty fun to watch and see what kind of creations everyone made. Reid did really well!

Like my previous post said, we still find Reid suddenly napping in no particular place. This day he was b-e-a-t and I could NOT get him to wake up. I picked him up, talked to him, walked around, and then gave him to Grandpa!

We ate at home each night, rotating through who made dinner like we typically do. Each night we always enjoy some kind of dessert and this night my Dad and I made a trip to the good ole DQ for sweet treats for everyone! Yummers!

The kids each brought sleeping bags (because it is camp after all!) and ending up sleeping in Mom and Dad’s newly finished basement together each night. They each had bedside tables where they kept their things like journals, lanterns, water bottles and such.

Amy and Andy arranged a heptathalon (I think was the official name?) of 7 different events for the camp Olympics. Complete with registration check in and bags for each kid (and a clever plan behind each kids “entry” bib number), jerseys, disks, and a redemption coupon for treats at the end.  It was really fun to see the kids go through each event. I took a ton of videos but have the pictures here. Lots of smiles had by all and it concluded with medals and photo ops.

I just love this picture of Reid. It is his personality 100%. Mr. Goofball personality.

And this perfectly represents Griffin.  OSU gear, athletic wear, getting pumped.

Another day included an outdoor adventure of hiking at Gorman Nature Center. We went just under a couple miles and explored on and off trail (lol) as we reached a couple dead ends. It was quite a warm afternoon. The kids enjoyed climbing up fallen trees and walking on a tension line. Ironically, we didn’t see much nature in the form of animals there. But a lot of ferns and other plants, including loads of poison ivy. Happy to say though that I do not believe anyone got it!

Another fun activity was a lesson on botany followed by a trip around the yard, over the bridge, and to the play pen area where each of the kids got to choose a colored planter. Next, they took turns choosing hens and chicks and they each planted a planter to take home. Another fun keepsake!

The evening of hiking was also a cookout followed by s’mores and camping for Kevin, Andy, and the kids. They all set up tents in the side yard and then later after dinner and dessert (and catching lightning bugs) off they went in the dark with their headlamps to their tents. It ended up being a great night weather-wise for camping out with cool temps.

Next adventure was an afternoon of mini-go-karts, go-karts, and putt putt at the Infield in Lexington. Now this was quite a toasty afternoon, yikes! But that worked in our favor in that it was not really very busy and made for decent social distancing. Reid, sadly, was too young and small to both drive the mini-go-karts or be a passenger in the full size ones. So he played a bit on the playground and then sat with Daddy in the shade and watched Griffin and I do the go karts. We broke up the putt-putt into a group of kids, which I chaperoned because, well, Reid and the adults. Reid did surprisingly well and had a lot of fun. He even got a hole in one! It was technically a do-over, but a hole in one nonetheless. I was a bit worried as while we were there he began to have a really runny nose and for the next 24 hours he had a runny nose, but then it disappeared. So we wrote that off to camping outside and sinuses.

Later that night Kevin and I enjoyed a date night at the Phoenix Brewing Company patio. It was perfect patio weather and a nice couple of hours sans kids. We walked around the block but being a weeknight nothing was really open so we headed home after grabbing a bite to eat at the Taco Bell drive thru, lol.

Throughout the week the kids spent plenty of time making magnet creations, playing all kinds of games, and just spending time together. There were a couple days I literally barely saw Griffin very much!

On your own day we spent going to Kingwood Center and walking around, including a trip down the new Storybook Trail. We looked a many flower beds and plants and again, enjoyed getting out and doing something where there weren’t many people. Afterward, we went to Target where I took Reid in first, by himself, for him to choose what he wanted to buy with his spending money from Grandma and Grandpa. He chose a fun automatic car. Next, I took in Griffin and he already knew he wanted Pokemon cards. He is currently Pokemon obsessed. Kevin was on a work call in the car!

Back at the ranch it was more water play.

Another fun activity one afternoon was assembling and then painting wood crafts. Mom and Dad had carefully chosen something fun for each grandkid, something that suits their likes and personality. Reid was given a semi truck and Griffin a Jeep. They definitely took some time to put together, but were super cool and the kids did a great job painting them. Reid took a lot of time and sat there for probably 40 minutes painting!

Movie night was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the basement (in a box, if you’re Reid).

And then, pretty quickly, the week was over. We all put on our Camp B t-shirts and Amy took our Christmas Card photo along with photos of each family and Mom and Dad with all the grandkids. A short bit later the camp flag came down and was signed by each of us. Then camp was over! The Bethune’s headed home later that afternoon and we stayed one more night and went home on Sunday. We ended up getting a replacement computer for Mom and getting that all set up before we left.

It was a fun week full of a lot of great memories! We’re thankful for Mom and Dad’s generosity and hospitality in having all of us for the week. Cheers to Camp B!

May 1-31, 2020

May started off with some beautiful weather and an Essential Workers parade that came right by our house! It was a Friday evening and we gathered with several neighbors who came down to our common driveways where the parade turned. There’s a video below, but the kids (and adults!) thought it was pretty cool! Griffin drew some chalk art and we decorated some to celebrate.

Sadly, Pat’s brother Richard (Dickie) passed away unexpected in April. There was a graveside service in May that Kevin and I were able to attend along with Pat, Jim, and Brett. It was a nice service and a sunshine-filled afternoon.  I hadn’t been to the cemetery before, where Pat’s parents and brother, Elwood, are also buried. Their gravesites are quite unique and it was neat to hear the story behind it.

While I left work for a short time to go to the service, Dad was there taking inventory of his hosta seedlings that we planted and to pickup the remainder of the bag of soil. That was a lot of counting!

We haven’t ventured out much  between my work being busy and with the Stay at home Order. But one morning we woke up and I wanted to get out and about and get some fresh air with everyone. So we packed the kids bikes into the car and headed down to pickup Buckeye Donuts! We had a small picnic on the Oval near the Library on campus and the kids loved riding their bikes around. It was really our first time going out with the kids. We had our masks and wore them when we went to the Horseshoe and rode our bikes around. We also ventured to “downtown big city” and walked around some in the public space across from the Arena. We took a family photo at the same place Kevin and I had pictures taken on our wedding day. Reid and Griffin each took pictures of us!

With the nicer weather and not really having options of going anywhere we’ve been spending a good bit of time outside. Brutus has been really great on walks, in fact I often take him without his leash on and he listens really well. He’s been enjoying some front yard freedom with us too.

Look at my little sleeping boy! He is probably faking it here, but he’s cute nonetheless 🙂  We’ve been wearing masks at Millcreek since early to mid-May when businesses were allowed to open up following the guidelines in place  by the Governor.  Even though we had operated the entire time as an essential business, we were not required to wear masks during that time. It definitely makes things interesting and they are not at all comfortable to wear in the heat and humidity. But anymore it’s just the norm. Each person is wearing theirs upon arrival to get their temperature checked each day.  Given that most of the work at Millcreek takes place outside, we encourage our employees to wear them, but they aren’t required if working alone in a greenhouse or when outdoors and social distancing can occur.  Walking quickly in and out of hot greenhouses  or working within them proves to make mask wearing uncomfortable and a “practical” challenge for keeping them on all the time for our employees. And I get it – it’s not comfortable!

An upside to being home so much is the boys are really learning to play well together and have been having a lot of fun. Kevin sends me pictures like this while I’m at work late :).

Reid seems to be our little early morning riser, often getting up just after 6 am. I’m usually up by then too so he comes to finds me and he has recently wanted to come on walks with me each morning. Can you believe here, in May, he is wearing his winter coat and a blanket!! There were a few mornings of freezing temperatures in mid-May and we definitely had some frosts.

We took a drive to Enon to see Pat and Jim and to deliver some spring flower planters to Pat for Mother’s Day. It was a chilly and breezy afternoon! The boys stayed in the car most of the time since it was chilly and we all kept our social distance while walking around the yard a bit. These are strange times! We headed to Young’s for lunch and experienced their new “drive-thru” which was actually quite smooth!

In the mornings Reid helps me make my coffee, he grabs a snack, and then lately we’ve been sitting in the dining room and watching nature. This usually by 6:20 or so. We sit there for a bit and look for birds, bunnies, squirrels, dogs, and such. Then we go up and I get dressed and we head out on our walk with Brutus (Reid in jammies sometimes but if I’m dressed he often wants to get dressed too!). I like our new morning routine.

On Mother’s Day I work up to a lovely morning with the kids. We were all wearing our matching family jammies. There were lovely flowers, coffee mugs, and my most favorite – my yearly painting of the boys handprints, which we later hung in our bedroom along with the others.

We haven’t allowed any customers to walk or shop through the nursery since the whole COVID-19 thing began. Along with that, we haven’t allowed school age children there either, which basically means kids of employees. I did, however, go out on a Sunday with Kevin and the boys to get succulents for teacher gifts for the end of the year. We parked outside the gate and walked to the greenhouse and the boys had a great time. Rock climbing the rock “wall” was their favorite part, lol. It’s been strange to not have Kevin and the boys visit me each week. Typically, they bring dinner out during the week usually one time each week so I get to see the kiddos since my work days are so long. This was the first time they’d been there in over two months!

Griffin made this lovely play-doh version of Kevin, complete with his briefcase! Isn’t it lovely? I particularly like the smile and spiked hair.  Finn also helped Daddy clean all of our car mats, which were horribly dirty. Especially mine from the gravel driveways at Millcreek. They all look sparkling new now :).

Brutus loves it when anyone will play ball with him in the back yard. He really loves his jolly ball.

Our latest thing now that school is out is family bike rides! We’ve decided to make it our summer mission to bike ride to each of the ice cream shops in Powell! So, to begin we went to Graeter’s. It was our first time going out on Jewett Road with Griffin on his own bike and he did a fabulous job. Kevin and Reid went first, then Griffin, then me. We were able to make it there in about 17 minutes and home in even less. We got “curbside” delivery where they brought our ice cream out to us along the path, which I had preordered through the app. It was great!

I’m doing a separate birthday post for Reid’s 3rd birthday, but here you can see him enjoying several of his new things! I think he’s pretty happy!

Memorial Day was a bit different this year with no parade. It kind of broke our tradition of up and at em early to get Tim Horton’s to take to the parade! Instead, we gathered in the early evening at the Vertucci’s new house for a driveway happy hour with the Manning’s and Vertucci’s. We brought our chairs and tent for some shade as it was a hot day! We had fun catching up with everyone and the kids watched some shows and blew bubbles.

Matchy matchy! The boys are really in to wearing the same clothes or pj’s lately. And recently I was able to get them both new shoes that were the same. Griffin’s poor tennies were in such bad shape the velcro didn’t even stay attached anymore and the toes were about rubbed off. Looking sharp boys, let’s keep them looking new for awhile, ok?  Griffin’s athleticism is quite admirable! He’s recently been doing some “trick riding” he calls it where he shows us all of his skills. Here in this video he shows us how he stands on one side of his bike (one pedal) while biking. He’s got some great balance and core strength and I love his current motto “speed, strength, confidence.”. He’s been talking about becoming my trainer, so he can train me to run. He’s quite a fast runner and this discussion came up since I can’t run at his pace, lol!

Griffin loves to get Lego sets and typically starts building them and then gets either bored or distracted or frustrated and moves on to making his own inventions. I’m amazed at his ability to make such creative things! His ships, planes, ninja structures, etc., are made with such detail and often symmetry. Full of weapons that actually fire!

Our second bike ride for ice cream was to the new DQ up on Seldom Seen in Powell. We were able to go Jewett Rd., to Liberty Rd., and then cut through Adventure park to the bike path that goes along the railroad tracks up to Seldom Seen . When we arrived, we saw signs that said their lobby was closed. Oops! Didn’t think to look that up first. We then tried to order through the app, which said they were closed. They clearly were NOT closed and after talking to an employee, she suggested we order through Grub Hub. Whew, while the menu wasn’t the same, thankfully we were able to order dinner and dessert as we had biked there for both and it was a good 3 mile ride!

The boys have really been wanting to help in the kitchen lately, which I’m encouraging as they seem to like to eat their efforts, lol. So they fill up on healthy fruits :). They are actually both quite good with their knives. Kevin has been giving the boys haircuts throughout the quarantine. He does a great job and the boys love it! They get hair cuts and then time in the shower or bath which they love.  They’ve been making lots of forts with Haya and also playing Monopoly seems to be a new favorite for Griffin during the day.

While the end of the year ended a bit unusual, it was nice to be able to say goodbye to Mrs. Hale when Kevin drove to the school to pickup his classroom items. It was a “curbside drive-through” pickup and you weren’t allowed to give hugs or anything, but he was able to wave from the car and give her his succulent planter. The buses also drove their routes in order to say goodbye for the summer to the kiddos. Mrs. B drove through without stopping, but thankfully since she goes down to the turnaround on our street they caught her on the way back and gave her  her succulent planter too. Yay!
