February 2019 ~ New Windows!!

We got new windows!! After years of not being able to open many of our windows (and me complaining) we took the plunge and replaced all of the windows in our house! The kitchen bay window at our new sink was replaced when we remodeled 4 1/2 years ago, but every other window, including those in the garage, are now brand new! The back door near the bay window in the kitchen was also replaced. We have not replaced the glass doors to the porch for now.

We went with Pella Architectural Series 400 windows that are white on the inside, white screens, oil rubbed bronze hardware, and a putty color outside (same as what was put in the kitchen bay window other than those were brown screens). They are wood windows with aluminum cladding on the outside. We have all brand new screens and in some rooms new blinds, other rooms just bare windows for now. All of the wood trim was replaced but remains unpainted as of now. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to open the windows!!! And each of the rooms looks so nice, even though they aren’t yet painted. We plan to paint them white which of course brings up the issue of our oak stained trim and doors everywhere. At some point we’ll likely get everything painted white – perhaps over a period of time as that will be a huge project.

Here are some room by room before and after photos. From the outside it can be hard to tell, but the old windows are the paint color and the new ones are a tan-like putty. Sadly I guess I didn’t get a full view of the front of the house before, only after. In any case, you’ll notice Brutus modeling his statue-like behavior as I went from room to room taking before pictures :).

BEFORE

AFTER

I took Griffin and Reid to the zoo the first day of the window project. It was in the mid 50’s and sunny to overcast. Right as we were arriving home they were tossing his window frame out and we were able to snap a pic of it coming out. Pretty cool!

In the loft, they did a really great job taking out the wood trim and then putting the same trim back. You can really barely tell they did anything other than the window is now white!

We’re also making some improvements to our screened in porch. A couple of years ago when we got a new roof, we had two skylights put in the roof. The ceiling, however, was a flat ceiling so you couldn’t see the windows. Brett is opening up the ceiling, putting in a couple of beams, some lighting, electrical (including controllers for the skylights that will open), a new window on the north peak. As it turns out when either Pella or Lowe’s slightly screwed up the window order and the two side windows in our master bath bay window were the incorrect size. The ended up giving us those for free! We were going to use one of the windows that came out of the house but instead ending up using a brand new window in the north peak wall of the porch. We’re putting in windows in the porch as well, but they aren’t in yet. I’m really looking forward to having more of a three-season room that stays pollen free 🙂 These pictures are the beginnings, it’s still a work in progress.

DSC_0143 We’ve had an adventurous week this week filled with lots of time outside, including picking many cucumbers and zucchini and playing with Lily. We went to the zoo three times too and saw so many fun animals. We explored several parts of the zoo we hadn’t previously been through and of course we got in a couple rides on the carousel. Finn absolutely loves to have the dogs around all the time. He climbs all over Lily and talks to both of the dogs all the time. When they walk into a room he often does a little dance. DSC_0147DSC_0231 DSC_0160 DSC_0164 DSC_0167 DSC_0174DSC_0220DSC_0204DSC_0207DSC_0210DSC_0209DSC_0219DSC_0202DSC_0199DSC_0195DSC_0193DSC_0192Finn continues to love to climb and test the waters with what he should and shouldn’t be doing. One evening in the kitchen he pulled a box off the chair along with his to go bag and proceeded to step on the box while carrying his bag.  He certainly is able to multi-task! He also loves to climb on his toy car in his room and stand on the seat and get things off his dresser, in this case, a bunch of homeless socks!DSC_0233 DSC_0236IMG_20140718_174847881Thursday we were able to host a family gathering at our place as Kevin’s brother Sean along with Chris and their kids Max and Charlotte are visiting from New Mexico. Grandma and Grandpa Armstrong and Brett were here as well. Finn enjoyed meeting his cousins for the first time and the kiddos played together for awhile in the basement and outside. Unfortunately, rather sad circumstances led to their trip to Ohio as they are here to attend two unrelated funerals. So while Sean and Chris traveled on Saturday, Grandma, Grandpa, Max, Charlotte, Brett, Missy, Kevin, Finn and myself spent the day together at the zoo. Though the day started of rainy it actually turned out to be a perfectly pleasant overcast day!

Finn was only wearing his socks, and left cute little trails all over the driveway. DSC_0402DSC_0403The highlight of this trip to the zoo for Finn was riding the camels (mamals)! He was super excited (though it doesn’t look like it here) and wouldn’t stop saying “mamals, mamals, mamals!”. DSC_0339 DSC_0331 DSC_0330 DSC_0334 DSC_0337Several areas of progress this week on the remodeling. On Monday Kevin and Brett prepped and framed the bay window area for new windows (installed on Tuesday) and added new cedar siding. After the windows were installed (by Lowe’s) Brett finished the details. The new windows are shorter than the previous windows since the kitchen sink and counters will be along the wall. Kevin primed the wood with tinted primer, so from the outside you can’t even tell anything was done. These guys are professionals 🙂  Our new refrigerator arrived on Thursday and Brett also finished up the food pantry with all of the shelving and framing for various items that will be installed (a drawer freezer and either the wine fridge or ice maker). Kevin filled the nail holes and then sanded everything so now all that remains is for the shelves to be painted and the counter to be installed. Things are moving right along!DSC_0126 DSC_0151 DSC_0153 DSC_0181 DSC_0182 DSC_0229 DSC_0279 DSC_0280 IMG_20140720_090255356 IMG_20140720_090313275 IMG_20140720_090333978 IMG_20140720_090548035
